  • Event 7004 xexch50 with 504 Need to authenticate first fo remote host

    Hi,

I'm hoping someone here can help me cause I'm out of ideas.

We're running Exchange 2003 SP2 and since yesterday we have troubles sending emails to one external domain.
It seems like the emails are either stuck in the queue or are eventually being delivered after 8h or more. However this doesn't apply for all of them. Some are being delivered quicker and others just seem to be stuck in the queue.
We have no problems with sending emails apart from this domain.
Also can we receive emails from all.

I've called up the IT guy on the other end and they can see the same error we're seeing except they haven't got a problem sending emails to us neither have they got any other issues.

The event log on the exchange server shows this:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSExchangeTransport
    Event Category: SMTP Protocol
    Event ID: 7004
    Date: 26/06/2009
    Time: 1:23:24 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: xxx
    Description:
This is an SMTP protocol error log for virtual server ID 1, connection #149. The remote host "203.161.117.82", responded to the SMTP command "xexch50" with "504 Need to authenticate first ". The full command sent was "XEXCH50 2660 2 ". This will probably cause the connection to fail.

I read up on this error and it's actually harmless and can be ignored if it appears for sending mails to an external host.

The SMTP log will shows me this:

The only thing I remember to have changed a week ago is setting the Exchange organization from Mixed Mode to Native Mode in order to prepare for the rollout of Exchange 2007.
But I doubt this would have anything to do with the error.

Would anyone know what the 2660 2 in this XEXCH50 2660 2 command stand for?

It appears only email that are responded with XEXCH50 2660 2 fail.
    I have other domains which respond with XEXCH50 2084 2 or XEXCH50 2708 3.
This will still cause error 7004 but this can be ignored and most importantly the emails are being delivered.

    Your ideas are much appreciated....

Ok...I might be getting a bit closer to the problem.
It appears only emails with an attachment are stuck in the queue.
All other will flow through just fine.

But again, only for 1 domain.
