  • How to Install Server 2003 & Exchange 2003 in New Server?

    Hi,

We have one old Server Machine running Windows 2003 Server, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS and MS Exchange 2003 ent.
(All these services on One machine including Exchange)

Now we want to upgrade it to new server machine as the mail box size and the number of users are increased. we want the same name and same IP address on new server.

Pls help me to upgrade it to new server.

Pls check the activities that i have performed but failed to make new server.

    1. I have Installed Windows 2003 server on new machine and made it an additional domain controller, all the users replicate to new server.

    2. transfered all FSMO rolls., and made it GCS.

    3. I want the same name as old server, but i m unable to rename, it shows error that the server name already exist.
when i failed to rename server then i proceeded for further activities.

    4. i have transfer all DNS zones and pointed all Host A record to New server. and made it primary server.

5 . I have installed all the services that Exchange server requires ( IIS, ASP.net, NNTP SMTP)

    6. when i started Exchange server installation with /disasterrecovery switch . and was trying to made Action- Disaster recovery on Messaging and collaboration services. Then again shows a Error - "The server object must exist in Active Directory in order to recover this server. If you are attempting to install this serve try installation without "Disaster Recovery Switch" .

So these all problem i m facing During Setting up a new Server ..

I have learned lots of articals but not able to solve the problem.

Pls any One Let me know the Complete Installation procedure so that i can install new server easily.

Hope i will find the better solution from you all experts.

    Thanks....

Check out Sembee's guide to swing migrations which should give you all the info you need.

      Hi Wise_scorpions

First thing in your case The server object must exist in Active Directory in order to recover this server. If you are attempting to install this serve try installation without "Disaster Recovery Switch" .

Check configuration partition using adsiedit.msc check fo services conatiner--->Microsoft Exchange--->Expand organization name---> expand servers container in that do you see your old exchange server listed?

      Regards,

Why do you want to keep the same name? That is simply asking for trouble and puts your data at risk because you have to do recovery.
If you do swing, then at no point is the data at risk.

Re: How to Install Server 2003 & Exchange 2003 in New Server?

          Hi Friends,

If i will not keep the same name as the old server, then we would re-join all the users MS Outlook accounts to the new servers.

Besids of keeping same name.....i have joined new server to DC and transfered all roles to new server...and made it GC.

At the time of Exchange installation, i have installed it without "/disasterrecovery" switch. and Dismount all Mailbox stores after installation.

Then i replaced all MDBDATA files to new server's MDBDATA files and able to mount stores.

Now the problem what i m facing is. in Administrative groups Its showing the New and Old both server....we don't want old server listed there.
The other thing is when i was looking at mail box store all the mailboxes were there but with "RED Circled". When i tried to reconnect it to users its not showing the particular user associated with that mail box.

Pls help me to solve this issue..

          Thanks...
          NK

Re: How to Install Server 2003 & Exchange 2003 in New Server?

Your understanding of how Exchange works is wrong.
As long as both the old and the new server is alive, you do not have to touch Outlook. That is a common misconception. Outlook will redirect to the new server automatically.

Without using the DR switch, the new server is treated by the domain as exactly that - a new server. It is not treated as a replacement for the existing server. You have basically made a mess.

If you have both servers with the same name, then cleaning up the mess is almost impossible. You cannot hack out the server from the domain in adsiedit.msc because you do not know which one is the live server and which is the dead server.

It is then complicated by the server being a domain controller as well.

If you had trusted what was said in earlier posts about doing a swing migration you would not have had this mess. There are no shortcuts to doing a migration of Exchange 2003 to new hardware.

Ultimately I think you are probably looking at extracting all content from the store using exmerge and writing off your entire domain and start fresh. It is going to be the only way you can get a clean environment.
