  • Exchange Databases Moved and NT Backup

This might seem obvious to anyone but if one moves the Storage Database
files from their default position to another position or disk on the Server
will NT Backup immediately account for this when covering a full storage
backup or could there be any cases where something could be left out ?
[The moving having being completed without error of course]
    Thanks.

I tried that a long time ago, but was using veritas. there were no problems with it, since it uses the exchange configuration to see what to backup...

So i assume that the NTbackup will not cause you any probs...

(then again - i may be wrong)

Thart's what I was thinking .... but it is your "then again - i may be wrong"
      that worries me.
MS should have stated it somewhere but I have not seen it so far.
The backup reports say all is ok apparently. The events also. But ....
The only real way to obtain the confirmation is to try a full restore but the
server is Online 24/24 and a 'good' full backup should be done before that.

      Thanks

why not just try to back it up?
won't you see if it backs up the exchange DB as well? (if it's big enough - you will even see according to the suze of the BackUP...)

Exchange Databases Moved and NT Backup

Of course one sees that the information on the backup may seem coherent
be it in size or otherwise but I would have thought that there was an
MS statement somewhere confirming this seemingly obvious answer that NT
Backup understands that Exchange has the DB's elsewhere and takes care
          of this accordingly.

Maybe Bill thinks it's time to start saving those kb's seeing how slow updates are lately... every MB of bandwidth counts...

You have no way of specifying in NTBACKUP where it takes the DB files from, so I think it's safe to assume that it goes to backup wherever exhange keeps the files.
If your exchange works fine (no errors in log?) i think it's safe to assume that the backup would work. especially since it's NTbackup - thinks like microsoft...

Well, I hope this is so.
Anyway as soon as I can I will experiment on this on another server
shifting the DB's and doing full restores.
              Thanks
