  • Cannot decommision dead exchange 5.5 in exchange 2003

    Hi all,

I have inherited this unique environment.

This company had Exchange 5.5 which than was upgraded to exchange 2000, than they decided to migrate exchange 2003. So they had two exchange server running 2000 and 2003. However exchange 2000 server had permanently died and now I cannot decommission the old 2000.

The problem is that I cannot raise the domain level to 2003 because it still sits in the "administrative group -> Servers" I cannot take this server out.

Does anyone know how to remove this?

Build a replacement server in a VM, with the same name as the original, now dead server.
Reset the computer account in ADUC - DO NOT delete it.
Reinstall Exchange using the DR switches.
Once the server is up, complete the migration to the new server and then remove Exchange gracefully using add/remove programs.
Drop the machine in to a workgroup and delete.
