  • Advice Sought - Mailbox Store Error

Hi Getting the following error message in our evnt logs for exchange and we think it is causing Exchange to crash every 3 days or so:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store
    Event Category: General
    Event ID: 9689
    Date: 02/06/2009
    Time: 05:00:56
    User: N/A
    Computer: SERVER1
    Description:
Exchange store 'First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SERVER1)': The logical size of this database (the logical size equals the physical size of the .edb file and the .stm file minus the logical free space in each) is 77 GB. This database size has exceeded the size limit of 75 GB.
If the logical size of this database is not reduced to less than the maximum size limit, this database will be dismounted the next time a database size check is performed.

Exchange Standard edition has a maximum size mailstore, and that's 75GB. (well, it's lower, but you can increase it to 75GB)

This is the PRIVATE store, as opposed to the PUBLIC Store.
I would suggest putting some restrictive folder limits on your users for a start.
How many users do you have all up ?

Apart from this, options to move forward would be to create another store (Exchange standard 2003 only allows one store)
you could create another administrative group, with another storage group, however I suspect Standard edition doesn't allow you to do this either.

You could dismount your database, run the maintenance tool to try and trim down the size ?

You could setup mailbox maintenance, so that it runs every night and deletes eveyrthing in "deleted items" that's older than 7 days..

you could configure archival/retention policies to ensure that email is archived off to a PST folder. (This works well in conjunction with mailbox limits)

Have you ever carried out an offline defrag. of the database?

This needs to be done out-of-hours. Also, make sure you back up the database and other associated files in the folder before doing so.
