  • Is it possible to rename an Exchange Server [Was: can it be done?]

Is it possible to rename the hostname and change the ip address of an exchange server?
for example, I have a exchange 2003 back end server name "MSX01.iscor.com" IP" 172.168.0.1" and I want to rename and change the ip address to "EMSX02.iscor.com" ip "172.168.0.2"

    many thanks...

Mixed advice (have a review of the first page here, for example)

Generally, rename seems to be a no-no but an IP change should be OK

Will you still be maintaining a computer on the network called MSX01 after the rename?

Here is the thing, I have msx03 and msx04 as cluster exchange with an active/passive node. msx01 is the EVS.

I plan to remove the cluster and go back to single mode exchange server. So once I go to single node exchange, server msx03 and msx04 will be decommission.

        The plan is to:
        1) build a new exchange server on the domain with a different name as msx02 and different ip address.
        2) Stop the exchange cluster service amd break the exchange cluster.
        3) Move the information storage to the new exchange server msx02.
        4) Decommission msx03 and msx04 server.
        5) Rename the new exchange server msx02 to the msx01 and rename the ip same as msx01.

msx01 use to be the Exchange Virtual Server (EVS) when it was in the cluster.

any suggest or am i missing anything?

Why do you need to keep the same name?
          MX02 is fine

(this wasn't meant to be a funny question by the way).
          cheers

              ok fair enough.
If you fancy it, you could make full backups, break the cluster so it runs on one node, wipe and reload the removed server and install Exchange, move mail, public folders etc over to it, sit like that for a bit, remove the cluster completely, sit like that for a bit and then install a new MX01.

If you have a test environment how about:
Down the cluster, copy the priv/pub etc.
Build your AD in a test and disaster recover exchange onto a new server, restore the databases?
              cheers
