  • Exchange 2003 FE Tranaction Logs

I am need of help. I'm still in the process of migrating our Exchange servers to new hardware, but I have run into a problem. I'm not ready to put the new equipment in place and retire the old. On my current in production FE I would like to remove/flush the old transaction logs that are over a year old. What would be a proper way of doing this? Would I use Windows Backup Utility to achieve this? If so, could anyone post or point me to a link to assist me here. Thank you for your time.

NTBackup will do the job. Look here for further info:

Thanks you for the quick response. I just tried to remove Novell Client off the server and that failed. It seems I will have to bring the FE down, boot into safe mode then remove the Novell client.. My day has gone from bad, to really bad...

Should I run NT Backup on both the FE and BE? Can I safely run the backup on the FE and not the BE?

You should run NTBackup everywhere you have data that you don't want to lose. I'm assuming the mailboxes are on your BE (hence why it's a BE) so you should back up Exchange on the BE as well as the FE. Also, to clarify because I don't use a FE/BE configuration: are you sure the logs on the FE are Exchange transaction logs and not just SMTP logs. If they're SMTP logs there's no need to back them up just delete them.

The best practises for a Frontend Server is to enable circular logging. No need to back up a frontend server.

Re: Exchange 2003 FE Tranaction Logs

Thanks for responding guys. Since I have last posted, I backed up the FE. The FE in my organization had 4 mailboxes on it! I ran NT Backup and it cleared up the transaction logs on the FE. There are 4 mailboxes that live on the FE for some reason... Once I ran NT Backup, I cleared up 1.5G of transaction logs. The servers that I inherited are completely screwed up! At least I am able to receive email now since clearing the transaction logs on the FE. This forum is top notch, and it is awesome that you guys take the time to help people. It has been a tough day for a Exchange n00b.

I have my work cutout for me..

Moving mailboxes is quite easy so you might want to think about moving them to the BE server(s). Do you know anything about these accounts?
                cheers
