  • Possible to rebuild a older state of an exchange database from the transactions logs?

    Hi everyone!

I have (inherited actually..) a small exchange 2003 server. Everything works fine and I have my database working. I 've noticed that since 2007 the database has never been backed up. So I have found a huge amount of transactions logs.
A client has deleted some messages a long time ago but now he would like to have them back. Is it possible to use the transaction logs and rebuild the database in an older state so as to recover these deleted messages? I have done a rough search in the transaction logs and I have seen some traces of the deleted messages into them so maybe the deleted mails actually exist in them?

Thanks in advance for any help!

The transaction logs will contain everything the server does.
Now it should be possible to replay the transaction logs in to a new database, but would take some care. You would also need to change the settings on the database to retain the deleted items so that the items you want are not removed from the database again.

Its an awful lot of ifs, buts and maybes, and would be something I would try on a test system that is a clone of production, using a copy of the database files.

if you have all the logs since the db first came online you can replay them into a recovery SG and mount the store and recover the messages. The only gotta yeah is that you can not replay all the logs or you will just replay the delete and end up with the same db that you already have.
