  • SBS 2003 Exchange Issue External Email Default SMTP Virtual Server

    Hi All

External Email is not being fully delivered to my Exchange server

From the SMTP logs i can see the email hitting the SMTP service, but the message never reaches Exchange

Users can send internal email fine

Users can send to external addresses fine

There are no non delivery reports or anything like that, it looks like email just disappears!

I have re-ran the INternet Connection wizard, no change. I have restarted the server, no change. ISA server is running on the machine, but always has been, and there have been no changes that i am aware of. The machine has not been updated recently

anyone got any ideas at all? I am completely stumped

Just FYI, the Default SMTP Virtual Server is not present in INETMGR, only if i drill down through Exchange System Manager > Servers > SERVER > Protocols > SMTP

Have you got any anti-spyware scanning software installed or AV scanning emails?

McAfee is installed, but it is very old. We believe now that there may be a virus infection

        Oh dear.

Has it got the latest virus definitions?

Download the Microsoft Malicious software removal tool and run it.

        Run a scan:

You cna download a free trial of Mcafee from their website that is good for 90 days, so do that quickly and get a scan performed.

Download a Best Practices Analyser Tool for Exchange 2003

Download MBSA from Microsoft and see what they recommedns or shows.

Does the server and exchange have the latest server packs?

Also, when the users aren't online, in the past, to quickly ensure I had a database backup of Exchange, I dismounted the store and manually copied the database to external storage device.

Just to say - that is normal. When Exchange is installed on the server IIS Admin gives up control of SMTP to Exchange.
