  • MSExchangeAL events 8026 and 8260: Cannot Access Address List Config

Ok, I have been "cleaning up" our Exchange 2003 server before I migrate it to new hardware. I noticed this event in the logs.

    Event ID: 8026
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSExchangeAL
    Event Category: LDAP Operations
Description: LDAP Bind was unsuccessful on directory <Fully Qualified Domain Name of Windows domain controller>for distinguished name ''. Directory returned error:[0x51] Server Down.

After reading this MSKB, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272552 , I think I have a better understanding of the issue. I did demote a DC/GC and bring it off the network. At the end of the MSKB, it suggest that changing the DC that RUS is pointed to will correct the issue.

My question is: I have a dc/gc I can point Exchange to. When I open ESM, Recipent Update Services, I see two entries.

    Recipient Update Service (Enterprise Configuration)
    Recipient Update Service (MyDomain)

Should I change BOTH of these entries under properties, and browse for a different domain controller?

I was also wondering. Some other people experience this issue and their server would require a reboot. How come it appears that Exchange is working in my enviroment? I have added many mailboxes and I don't really see any issue with the server besides that one event(so far from what I have found).

    Thanks,

    John

Exchange will tick along for a while without its domain controller, particularly for RUS activities. The usual sign of problems is when new accounts do not get an email address.

Change both of those entries to another DC/GC - usually the same one. You will need to restart System Attendant for the change to take effect.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my posts Simon. I had one more question. When you say I should restart RUS, do you mean I should Rebuild or Update from within ESM under the Recipient Update Services folder?

      Thanks again for your time.

Doh. I just looked under Services on my Exchange 2003 server. "Smacks self" I see what I need to restart now. The service is listed as Microsoft Exchange System Attendant.

Now this brings up another question. If I point the Exchange server to the correct DC/GC and restart the System Attendant, will that effect users using their mailbox(Sending/receiving email and the like)?

Restarting SA will usually knock the store offline as well, so it will cause a short outage for the users.
