  • Demote Exchange 2003 cluster

    Hi

I currently have 2 exchange servers that are clusered but i want to get rid of this cluster so that i have just one exchange server. ( and claim back a server)

Does anyone know how to to this? and is it fairly simple? The reason i want to to it is beacuse i want to import the the one exchange server in to VMWare ESX.

    Many Thanks

You have to swing the data out to another machine in the usual way. You cannot just break up the cluster. Therefore if you want to move in to virtual machine I would just build a new machine in the VM, new name etc and then swing. Once that is complete you can remove the cluster servers.

So you mean build a brand new server (on VMware) with exchange on it? Also would this cause issues with OWA that we also use?

        Re: Demote Exchange 2003 cluster

You are going to have to deal with OWA at some point.
If OWA is on a frontend server then it will be transparent to the users.
If it is not on a frontend server then you either have to move everything as quickly as you can or build another server as a temporary frontend server to serve both the old and the new. Although if you do go down the temporary server route, you cannot cut corners, it has to be patched correctly for both Windows and Exchange otherwise it will not work correctly.

Thanks sembee. Sounds like a big job then. I definatly use OWA on the same server. Once i then rebuild the new server and swing the data across, could i use the IP address of the cluster node on the new server as this would save having to change firewall configs?

Yes that's pretty much the trick to get the migrate database out of the cluster.

Ok I assume you have active passive cluster

Before you proceed make sure to take a good backup....Just in Case.

              Re: Demote Exchange 2003 cluster

If you want any period of co-existence then use a new IP address. Trying to use the same IP address will be problematic.

                Re: Demote Exchange 2003 cluster

So If i decide to move to exchange 2007, would doing the swing migration be the best process? and would they co-exist quite happily untill i change the connection in outlook? I obviously want the whole process to be a s seemless as possible.

                  Re: Demote Exchange 2003 cluster

Swing is your only option to move to Exchange 2007. There are no in place upgrade options.
Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 will co-exist quite happily. There are some considerations to be made - for example you will need to have a third machine if you are going to use a cluster and if you have a frontend server that will have to be replaced with an Exchange 2007 CAS first, but apart form that it is quite straight forward.
