  • Missing thousands of items after workstation transfer

    Hello everyone,

I just switched to a new desktop PC, and set up Outlook 2003 on the new machine to connect to my exchange 2003 server. After the switch, my mailbox on the new PC shows only items for the past few days, maybe 40 or so messages in sent, inbox, etc., but the server says that there should be over 17k items in my account, between all folders.

I can't figure out where these items went. I've tried all the settings (with my limited knowledge) and can't make them come back. I assume they still exist since the server shows the 17k items and a mailbox size of nearly 500mb.

Can this be fixed? Could it have anything to do with my .ost file?

    thanks.

The usual reason is a view.
    Check the account through OWA.
The only other thing it could be is a PST file stored the items offline and what you are seeing in your mailbox is deleted item retention.

Thanks for the reply. I checked through OWA, and there are only 2 pages of messages, so I guess what I'm seeing on the server is deleted item retention.

So the next question is if a PST file stored the items offline, where would they have been stored? In a new PST file, or an existing one? Could an OST file have anything to do with it?

And finally, how did this happen?

      Thanks.

OST is similar to a PST, but not the same.
The way that it happens is the deliver location is changed in Outlook to a personal folder rather than a mailbox.

However it can also happen with auto archive - particularly on a new machine where you might not have had a chance to disable auto archive.
