  • RSG, ExMerge and large mailboxes

We currently sell backup exec 12.5 and are struggling with the whole GRT, backup to disk/tape issue. We are looking at using item retention and RSG's instead as our preferred method but we are concerned about how to restore mailboxes over 2GB because of the issue with exmerge and unicode pst file incompatibility. Can anyone tell me how we can around this issue.

You have to use recover mailbox.

Pardon me for saying so, but item retention and RSG is not a valid backup solution as far as I'm concerned. I would never rely on these as a method of restoring or recovering data in a day to day scenario. Item retention is a "convenience" setting, not a backup alternative. RSG is an "emergency" method for recovering mailboxes or mailbox stores, not a backup alternative. My suggestion would be to:

        1. Get BackupExec working properly OR
        2. Find another Exchange-aware backup program to do the job

Agreed. With respect, are you certain you should be selling a product that you don't know how to support?
