  • Outlook 2003 Trying to Connect to Exchange server

Hello everyone im hoping for some help with what seems to be a pretty common issue but i cant seem to find any specific solutions.

First my environment. I have 1 windows 2000 SP4 server with exchange 2003 SP2, the server is a little older only 4GB and 2 Xeon 2.6gb procs i also have 2 windows 2003 R2 domain controllers at this site both pretty new and another windows 2000 domain controller at another site. we have 300 nodes and 250 users 328 mailboxes
The issue is about 2 months ago a few users started reporting that they were getting popups from outlook saying that it was trying to retreive data from the microsft exchange server (servername.domainname.com). Now every couple of weeks of few more users tell the helpdesk there getting these mesages all at differnet parts of the day. I ran the exchage troubleshooter 1.1 and got this out put.(Oh ya and it did not mater what domain contoler i specified same output was made. If i run the tool at night abviously everything is ok)
Maximum 'MSExchangeDSAccess Domain Controllers(minoso.accuquote.com)\LDAP Read Time' beyond error threshold Time Range: 01/06/2009 17:19:29 - 01/06/2009 17:24:23
The maximum value of 'MSExchangeDSAccess Domain Controllers(minoso.accuquote.com)\LDAP Read Time' is beyond the error threshold of 100 ms. The measured value is 141 ms.
Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it.
Maximum 'MSExchangeDSAccess Domain Controllers(minoso.accuquote.com)\LDAP Search Time' beyond error threshold Time Range: 01/06/2009 17:19:29 - 01/06/2009 17:24:23
The maximum value of 'MSExchangeDSAccess Domain Controllers(minoso.accuquote.com)\LDAP Search Time' is beyond the error threshold of 100 ms. The measured value is 125 ms.

    Area: RPC Performance Counters
    Time Range: 01/06/2009 17:19:29 - 01/06/2009 17:24:23
    High user RPC activity Time Range: 01/06/2009 17:19:29 - 01/06/2009 17:24:23
Since the RPC operations per second per user is greater than 0.25, the RPC operations per second rates indicate a user or users on this server are unusually active. The measured RPC operations per second per user rate is 0.26.
Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it.Any help would be great.
    Thanks

Re: Outtlok 2003 Trying to Connect to Exchange server

    A couple of things:

    1. Which DC's does Exchange have listed on the Directory Access tab? If it's using a DC from another site, you might want to configure directory access manually to use only local DC's.

    2. The RPC ops and LDAP latency make me think you have Outlook plugins, handhelds, or thrd party apps that are hitting Exchange and creating a high RPC load as well as clogging the network link to the Exchange server. Do you have any of the aforementioned?

Re: Outtlok 2003 Trying to Connect to Exchange server

      1. So i checked the DC's exchange has listed there and it is only the two DC in our main site where the exchange server sits.

      2. i Know we don't have any other outlook plug-ins but we do have about 10 people using there balckberrys and Iphone to sync there email.

Also i found last night that there are about 17GB worth of PST files being accessed from our file server which is also one of our DC's could that be causeing the problem.

Re: Outtlok 2003 Trying to Connect to Exchange server

I am also wondering why some users experience it and others don't i mean yesterday i had a new employee start and he is now receiving the message. I thought maybe it was his network cables, jacks, switch port, VLAN etc... I checked everything out and it all checked out fine. I just can’t seem to explain this one.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: Outlook 2003 Trying to Connect to Exchange server

PST files being accessed over a network share is not supported and will usually result in a corrupt PST file.

          Something is being slow here.
How is the storage configured on the Exchange server? Separate logs and database drives?
Is the domain controller listed the local one, or a remote on?
