  • 2003 Enterprise upgrade issues

I am trying to upgrade from Exchange 2003 Standard (SP2) to 2003 Enterprise (SP2)

I've run into a few different issues, but to start things off which version should I be downloading

Outlook 2003 W32 English #1 PA BP for Svr (X09-6601

Exchange Svr Ent 2003 English MLF (X09-89777)

Exchange Svr 2003SP2 English #1 Std Ent (X11-63532)

    Exchange Svr 2003 English -2 #1 EntMac 04 w SP2 MLF (X11-78437)

    THANK YOU!

Outlook 2003 W32 English #1 PA BP for Svr (X09-66018 ) - This is Outlook.

Exchange Svr Ent 2003 English MLF (X09-89777) - This is the full installation CD

Exchange Svr 2003SP2 English #1 Std Ent (X11-63532) - This is the Service Pack

    Exchange Svr 2003 English -2 #1 EntMac 04 w SP2 MLF (X11-78437) - This is the Mac Client

Therefore you want the second item on the list. However you will also need the service pack as you have to reinstall that after the update, then all of the post SP2 updates. If you have already installed the service pack and have the installation files hanging around then you can use the same ones.

      Re: 2003 Enterprise upgrade issues

Thank you for the reply. I have downloaded the full version and the SP2 install. When running the setup, the only install option that I can choose (that makes sense) is a new Exchange 2003 installation (you are not running exchange).

Is that correct? I will take a full backup, run the install, reboot, install SP2, reboot, and install all the updates?

Sorry for all the noob questions, but I want this upgrade to go smoothly.

Where are you seeing that? On the autoplay menu?
If so, ignore that and close it. Run the setup.exe from the setup\i386 directory. From memory you should have an option to "upgrade".

          Re: 2003 Enterprise upgrade issues

Ok, I browsed to that directory and ran setup, then was prompted with this:

          Issue Description:

Exchange Server 2003 has a known compatibility issue with this version of Windows. For more information, refer to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=37488.

I checked the compatibility list and my server should be fine. I am running 2003 Server Standard SP1. Should I ignore the error and continue, or am I missing something? This server is a domain controller, but that didn't matter when I originally installed Exchange?

          Many thanks!

Ignore that error. Everyone gets that message. It is because Windows 2003 SP2 is newer than Exchange 2003 and there is a rare issue with clustering.

              Re: 2003 Enterprise upgrade issues

Thank you for all the help. I was able to upgrade to Enterprise edition, reinstall SP2 and most updates. I need to install a few others when I get more downtime.

I created another mailbox store and moved a few large mailboxes to that store. Everything is working great, but I am still getting the following error message in the event logs:

"Exchange store 'First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SERVER03)': The logical size of this database (the logical size equals the physical size of the .edb file and the .stm file minus the logical free space in each) is 68 GB. This database size is approaching the size limit of 75 GB."

I thought there were no size limits in Enterprise edition?

                There are no limits.
But the soft limit can still apply. You need to remove the registry entries for the check and then restart the information store.
