  • SMTP Service periodically stops sending email

    Hello,

I have a fresh install of SBS2003 R2 with all service packs/updates applied.
I have found that periodically, once ever day or two outbound email will build up in the que. The only way to release this que is to restart the smtp service. At the time of the fault, incoming email still works correctly. It appears internal email also works correctly.

This thread appears to describe an identical issue, however there is no resolution listed.

There are zero error messages within the event log.
    AV is Etrust 8.1
    Using Symantec Backup Exec 12
Server only configured for basic use: File Sharing / Email / DHCP.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

    Standard suspect is AV.
Therefore any antivirus on the machine must be removed and the server rebooted.

When the messages are in the queues, what does the message box say?
Are you routing email directory or via a smart host?

    Simon.

      Hi Sembee,

2 out of every 5 domains in the mail que are listed with a "Time next connection retry" time, however the rest are blank.

Email is routed directly. Sorry, missed that important point.

I will remove AV and reboot this evening outside work hours. Will post results asap.

      Thank You.

Are you sending particularly large emails or bulk emails?

Re: SMTP Service periodically stops sending email

          Hi Andy,

No, typical size of the emails "stuck" in the que are 50kb - 100kb.
Server has extraordinary low use in regards to emails. Typically in a single day no more than 20 or 30 are sent or received. Of all the times mail has been stuck, no more than 5 or 6 seperate domains have been listed, with perhaps 1 or 2 emails within each domain.

For example, this morning at 8am I discovered it had jammed again. It first time it had jammed in 4 days. When I checked, the oldest message in the que was from 11am the previous day. So I would assume it had been jammed for a little less than 24 hours.
The number of emails in the que was 4. Sizes were from 60kb - 180kb.
