  • eseutil issue

    hi,

i have exchange 2003 sp2 ent. on win2003 srv. & got the folowing issue:

When i am rying to run eseutil /d on edb located on a dir that its name contain a spce (eseutil /d W:\Exchsrvr Management/Managenment.edb).

Also got the same issue when the edb name itself contain a space (eseutil /d W:\Exchsrvr/2nd storage.edb).

In both cases command will terminate with "Usage Error: Invalid argument".

anyone know what should be the command syntax??

    Re: eseutil issue

So you are trying to defrag the exchange data base.

The syntax is eseutil /d "location of database file"

you need to run eseutil from the bin directory if environment variable is not set.

Database needs to be dismounted too

    Do this
    on cmd prompt
c:\program files\exchsrvr\bin> eseutil /d "drag and drop the database files"

Then try. Make sure you add path in quotes if there are whitespaces b/w the names
    Thanks & Regards

      Re: eseutil issue

      Thanks for your fast prompt.

Issue is with the file & directory names that contain a space...so i should run in the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin dir the folowing:

      >eseutil /d W:\"Exchsrvr Management"\"Managment 1".edb

      ??

      thanks

        Re: eseutil issue

Why do you want to do an offline defrag?
What version of Exchange are you running and what is the setup of the server.
Offline defrags do hold a measure of risk and there can be better ways of achieving things.

        The command would be:
        Code:
        eseutil /d "W:\Exchsrvr\2nd storage.edb"
but you can also make it

        Code:
        eseutil /d "W:\Exchsrvr\2nd storage.edb" /s "W:\Exchsrvr\2nd storage.stm" /t "D:\Temp\temp.edb" /f "d:\temp\temp.stm"
I would run eseutil to read the commands.
You can defrag to another drive which should make performance better.
        cheers
        Andy

          thanks.
i got exchange 2003sp2 ent. on win2003sp2 std.
i need to run defrag in order to shrink the database after deleting mailboxes.
did few defrags in my life & never used the /s - is it used to indicate location of streaming file??

So - esuming streamin file is on the same dir & that i have enought space etc' -while located on the bin dir - syntax would be:

          eseutil /d W:\"Exchsrvr Management"\"Managment 1".edb
          or
          eseutil /d "W:\Exchsrvr Management\Managment 1.edb"

          thanks

              Re: eseutil issue

How many stores/db's do you have?
Why not create a new mailbox and move the current mailboxes into it instead?
              cheers

If you are using Enterprise edition of Exchange then there is no need to do an offline defrag.
Simply move all the mailboxes to another store, drop the store that you want to offline defrag. Then create a new store and move the data back.

Offline defrag is not risk free, it should not be considered something that should be done as a regular thing.

                Can you afford the downtime?
                Do you have the space?

I have never run an offline defrag on Enterprise edition of Exchange.

                Simon.
