  • DSAccess is not detecting my additional Domain Controller

    Dear Friends,

I have win 2003 Active directory and front end back end exchange 2003 in my environment, Recently I added an additional DC to my Primary Domain Controller, i hope active directory side everything is going fine and replication too. i have checked event logs of both the servers, i didn't find any errors.

Now i am going to Transfer FSMO roles to new dc and then after i will demote old dc. Before Transferring FSMO roles, the exchange server must listen this new dc right?

But the DSAccess is not detecting my additional Domain Controller.

As per my knowledge i did sum changes in exchange server, i set
diagnostics logging level for all categories of the MSExchangeDSAccess service to Maximum. after that i waited for couple of days, their is no luck.

i don't have much sound in exchange side. So what are the things i need to change in exchange?

Any immediate help will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks in Advance.

Is the new server also a global catalog?
Exchange will only talk to global catalogs.
Furthermore it will only refresh its list of domain controllers on service start. If the DC it is using is available then it will not change.

Therefore, check the new DC is a GC then restart the Exchange services.

Do you see the server in the list within ESM?
      cheers

Re: DSAccess is not detecting my additional Domain Controller

        hi sembee,

        Thanks for your reply,

I have tested in my test environment, i am sure exchange will detect additonal DC. After detecting of Additional DC in exchange server Directory Acess, then i transfered FSMO roles to my Additonal DC and i made it as a Golbal Catlog. i found that everything is going well. Actually i did this in test environment. if you want i will send screen shots of my test exchange server to you.

Now i am facing problem with live environment, about 1 week back i have set the diagnostics logging level for all categories of the MSExchangeDSAccess service to Maximum and i restarted both the exchange server twice a day. Up to now DSAcess is not detected my Additonal DC.

can any body help me to come out from this issue.

        regards,
        gowtham

Is Exchange installed on a domain controller?
Have you changed the DNS to point at the new domain controller?

Have you considered that the new domain controller might have something wrong with it and needs to be DCPROMO out and then rebuilt?

            Dear sembee,

            Thanks for your response..

i already mentioned that my exchange enviroment is front end and back end environment. so their is no chance of exchange install in domain controller itself.

i already added Additonal domain contorller ip as a secondary DNS ip address to Exchange servers.

i hope their is nothing wrong to my domain controller. i am sure that we have to do some thing on exchange servers. The DirectoryAccess of exchange servers
            must listen my additonal DC.

            regards,
            gowtham.

Re: DSAccess is not detecting my additional Domain Controller

The fact that you are using FE/BE does not make my question about Exchange being installed on a DC invalid. I have seen all Exchange servers in a multiple server deployment installed on domain controllers in the past. Having Exchange on a DC does not stop you from using the FE/BE scenario.

Nothing has to be done to Exchange for it to detect domain controllers. Unless the server has had the auto detect mechanism turned off and is being manually set, it should find it automatically. If you are sure that it is set to automatic then I have to suspect the domain controller. It is new, the Exchange servers are not. You cannot be sure that the domain controller is fine.

I work on a simple basis with Exchange and Windows servers. If the server does not work as it should out of the box, then it is a bad build and is dropped out of the domain, wiped and rebuilt.
