  • Configuring IMAP for Pocket PC Mobile 6.0

I am trying to get my pocke pc to connect to the my Exchange Server 2003 using IMAP. I have IMAP and POP services runing and available for all users. But I do not know exactly what to put in the incoming server option in the pocket pc since I use the server IP toconnect to OWA (https://SERVERIP/exchange since I do not have a domain forwarded to use OWA.

Any ideas of what to use for incoming server, mobile exchange connection works but one of the employees connecting to the server already has an exchange connection on his phone an he wants to add this server as IMAP.

    Thank you

    Hi DLA,

    Here is action plan

you have pop / imap enabled, now both these protocols are used for receiving emails.

Your pocket pc is on internet (pre assumed)

you need to have host record like mail.mydomain.com on public dns which will be mapped to your firewall (need to have 110(pop), 143(imap), ports to be open). On you exchange server you must have pop or imap, which ever you are going to use, related services must be running and virutal server instance started.

Now mail.mydomain.com would be your incoming address, you can only use pop or imap, one at a time as incoming address.

If you need help setting up SMTP or outgoing email server let me know.

    Thank you
    Thanks & Regards

If you have a Windows Mobile device, why are you trying to use IMAP for email access?
Exchange 2003 has Exchange ActiveSync, as does the device. Full Synchronisation of the email, using less data than IMAP.

You will need to change the SSL certificate as you cannot issue certificates to an IP address. A host name should be used for SSL anyway to avoid security warnings.

      IMAP/SMTP/POP3 is simply not secure.

unless you are dealing in sensitive information SMTP/IMAP/POP will do in conjuction with certificates. Even in some one sniffs you data it's not that easy to break the cryptographic.

Active Sync is a good option too.

Whatever suits your need go with that.

Re: Configuring IMAP for Pocket PC Mobile 6.0

Thank you all for your help. I have a dynamic IP although it has not changed in two years so we just left it like this.

IMAP is working inside the network but not outside the network. I did add to the IIS firewall settings during setup the 143 port for IMAP still not working.

I do use Active Sync Exchange for most employees but I have a couple of external consultants that have already active sync exchange enable on their phones but they still want to get the emails from our company thru IMAP.

I did choose the option for the SSL security and I added a local created certificate witht he IP address of the server on the IMAP settings.

OWA, OMA used this certificate with no problem and we can access this resources with no problem.

IMAP outside the network is not working it gives me check that the setting are correct.

          Thank you,

Re: Configuring IMAP for Pocket PC Mobile 6.0

Can you do the following test

Configure Outlook Express profile and set it to use IMAP outside the network and inform us what happens? If it fails to connect
Then make a telnet session to the ip address on port 143 from outside the network and see what happens or if you are unable to do this create a test user account with a mailbox and PM me the info (user name pass/ your smtp domain name / connecting ip) i will configure at my end and let you know.
            Thanks & Regards

Re: Configuring IMAP for Pocket PC Mobile 6.0

I set up on regular Outlook 2007 an account outside the network and it was a success. I also did the Telnet connection and it worked. (see attached)

This puzzles me that on the pocket pc it works if I am connected thru wifi inisde te network but ones i use a wifi outside the network, it does not work.
