  • How to upgrade from w2k to w2003 domain with Exchange 2000 on DC?

    Hi,

    We currently have this setup:

Server1, Windows 2000, DC, AD, WIND, DNS, Exchange 2000 and BlackBerry Entreprise Server
    Server2, Windows 2000, DC, Backup
    Server3, Windows 2000. member
    Server4, Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003
    and some others....

We have fully migrated to Exchange 2003, we still have Exchange 2000 due to BlackBerry Entreprise Server.

I want to migrate the domain to 2003, but I am currently stuck with Exchange 2000 and the BlackEnterprise Server. (we have about only 5 users !!!)

I have an idea on how to proceed, but I am looking for your input, suggestions and recommandations about this.

    Thanks,

    anormand

Blackberry supports Exchange 2003 and 2007 so what is the issue?

Worst case just re-install as it is only 5 users, and that really is worst case.

Re: How to upgrade from w2k to w2003 domain with Exchange 2000 on DC?

My main concern, is the BES is on the DC with Exchange 2000.

May I install BES on a standalone server, (I want future upgrade and maintenance easy)

Because Exchange 2000 is on the DC and Exchange 2003 is on a member server. What is the impact of uninstalling Exchange 2000 especially on the AD.

Third, if all those steps are going smooth I plan to upgrade in place the Domain 2000 to 2003 by upgrading the SERVER1. Following those steps:
Server1 (ghost the server as a backup),
Server2 (ghost the server as a backup), Remove it from the domain with DCPromo.
      Shutdown Server2
Server1 Restart couple of time, check fonctionnability errors in log due the removal of Server2
Upgrade Server1 from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003
Restart Server2, erase it, Install Windows 2003 add it as a second DC.

May you review if I miss something or you have any advice ?

Sounds like you are over complicating this.

Do a knife edge migration of the BES on to another machine, even a virtual machine will be fine.
Then remove Exchange 2000 in the usual way.

DO NOT DCPROMO the machine while Exchange is installed as that is not supported.

I also wouldn't recommend an in-place upgrade. I never do in-place upgrades except NT4 to 2003 for the AD upgrade, and that is on a virtual machine so I can dispose of it later.
In-place upgrades will usually have problems, drivers other odd things occurring.

If you have two domain controllers then DCPROMO one out, wipe it and install Windows 2003 fresh, then prep the domain and DCPROMO it.
Once BES and the Exchange 2000 install has been removed from the other domain controller, repeat. You will then have two clean domain controllers.

Re: How to upgrade from w2k to w2003 domain with Exchange 2000 on DC?

          Ok....

I will recap to make to make sure I forgot nothing and as double verification if understand correctly.

          Now:
Server1 : Running Windows 2000, Domain Controler, AD, Exchange 2000 and BES 4.1
Server2: Running Windows 2000, Domain Controler
          Server3: Runnning Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003

During the process of installing Exchange 2003, AD have be updated according to Exchange 2003 needs.

          Planification for Migration:

          - Server2: Who is Domain Controler
          -- DCPROMO it out
-- Remove it from the network
          -- Format
          -- Install clean Windows 2003
--- Prep the domain (should be already done with Exchange 2003 ?? )
--- DCPROMO it as Domain Controler

          - Server1 : Running Windows 2000, Domain Controler, AD, Exchange 2000 and BES 4.1
          -- Uninstall BES 4.1
--- Install it on a separated server (ServerBES could be a virtual machine as member server)
          -- Uninstall Exchange 2000
          -- DCPROMO it out
-- Remove it from the network
          -- Format
          -- Install clean Windows 2003
--- DCPROMO it as Domain Controler

          Are they the correct steps?

          Regards,

Don't confuse prep for WINDOWS 2003 with EXCHANGE 2003. They are different. To introduce a Windows 2003 or a Windows 2003 R2 DC to the domain you need to prep.

For the BES, find the instructions from RIM for moving to a new machine. It needs to be done in a very specific way otherwise all of the handhelds have to be reconnected to the server.

              Ok....

I will do the domain prep for Windows 2003 domain.

Can I have Windows 2003 domain with a Windows 2003 server and one Windows 2000?
This question is in case I need to do one server at the time.

For BES if I only have 5 handhelds to reconnect to the server, it's not a big bad.
If it's the only issue, I can do a brand new BES installation. But I do not know if uninstalling BES and reinstalling BES accept Exchange structure?

BES doesn't care about the Exchange layout. As long as it can see the server it will be fine. However if you want to do a fresh install and have the licenses etc to hand, then do so. It will give you a chance to ensure the BES is at the latest version. Do note that you cannot be using both servers at the same time, as RIM will not allow that.

I also find that when reconnecting the devices to a reinstalled BES that wiping them first is most successful. If you have to get the devices back then you may want to check with the service provider to see if there are updated software for the device. Remember the device software is provider specific.

I keep this list handy as it has the links to the provider's download page at RIM:
