  • RPC over HTTPS Connection Failure

    Good Morning,

I have spent hours and months trying to resolve the same issue (see the microtech forum thread, 110 posts, 50,000 hits over 12 months).

    Exchange 2003 Server SP2
    SBS Server 2003
    Network Solutions *.mail.domain. com SSL
    SonicWall

    Laptop 1

    XP Pro SP2
Outlook 2007 with all MS updates

    Laptop 2

    Lenovo x61
    Vista Business
Outlook 2007 with all MS Updates

I have followed Petri 'How To's' for setting up exchange & Outlook (literally line by line).

I have successfully setup an Oulook 2003 machine, the problem is I have 12 laptops on the way with Outlook 2007, I really don't want to uninstall and reinstall 2003.

Petri says to NOT be in the VPN when setting this up, it seems to me that when we set the 2003 machines up (2 years ago) that we had to be in the VPN for the initial setup.

    Thoughts?

Don't hijack threads is the first thought. I have moved your post to a separate thread. Read the guide at the top of the forum which clearly states not to hijack threads.

RPC over HTTPS fails for three reasons only

    - wrong registry settings
    - certificate error
    - authentication settings.

In your settings you have shown the certificate as *.mail.domain.com - does that mean you have a wild card certificate? If so then that can cause problems with the configuration of this feature.

Furthermore, you are using SBS, which means you shouldn't be configuring this option by hand at all.

Therefore I would suggest the following.

Remove the RPC Proxy component from Add/Remove programs.
Remove the RPC and RPC-with-cert virtual directories from IIS manager.
Run IISRESET in a command prompt to write the changes to IIS metabase.

Then reinstall the RPC Proxy component to the server.
Run the connect to the internet and email wizard and enable the Outlook over the Internet option.

If you are using a wildcard certificate then remove it and replace it with a standard certificate. A 30 day trial certificate from RapidSSL will be fine to prove it works.

Then configure the clients as per the instructions in RWW.

    Simon.

Just my 2 cents... we run SBS 2003 at one of our sites and have had no end of problems with Outlook 2007. I now recommend that anybody running Exchange 2003 connects to it using Outlook 2003. Your CALs for SBS include licences for this.

I have built many SBS 2003 sites and have seen ZERO problems with Outlook 2007.

Fair enough. 99% of the problems have occured when users who usually use OUtlook 2003 try to use 07 - that works fine, but once they go back to 2003 it causes no end of trouble.
