  • public folder replication

Hi, ive installed a second ex2k3 server onto my domain as a member serevr. The current excahnge 2003 is alos a member server, but hardware is getting very old now.
I can see the two mail server under exchange system manager and i have been through all 25 public folders and added the second server as a replication partner. however it looks like only the system folders are in sync, if i look at the replication screen i see folders such as global event, internal, free/busy as 'in sync' nothing else. if i look on the old mail servers queue i can see 900 items awaiting replication into the default virtual smtp virtual server connection. any ideas, i have checked using ASEDIT the proxyAddress which is correct for both servers. i have enabled integrated windows authentication on both virtual smtp connections.

    thanks

    Re: public folder replication

Ignore the sync status. It cannot be relied upon. The only thing you can use is item count.
There are three reasons why replication fails.

    1. Smart host set on the SMTP virtual server.
    2. Restrictions on the SMTP virtual server
    3. AV scanning something or blocking something it shouldn't be.

Ensure that you can telnet to port 25 of the other server (both ways, so do it from the source to the new server and vice versa) using all three combinations - IP address, NETBIOS name and FQDN.

I have also seen issues when the FQDN is set the same on both SMTP virtual servers.

If the messages are in the queues, when you click on the queue what reason does it give?

      Re: public folder replication

Hi, got past the replication problem, virtural smtp had smart host assigned, removed it and now its working however if i look on my new or in fact on my old mail server the replication status shows 'local modified' ??? i will do an item count and see. What is interesting is that on the old server the disk size of the public folders pub1.edb & pub1.stm are 136Mb & 73MB however on the new servers they only showing 68Mb (.edb) & 71MB(.stm) i would think i should get roughly the same amount across both

        Re: public folder replication

It would be unusual to see the same database size. When you replicate the data any corrupt or deleted items are not replicated and there is no white space in the store. Therefore a reduction in the size of the database is not unusual and is to be expected.

Item count is what you can see in ESM when you look at one of the tabs. It may not be identical, but if it is only 10 or less out then I consider that to be in sync - due to the presence of corrupt or deleted item in the source.
