  • 2 email domains, 2 users, 1 email address

    Hi folks

    first time poster here...

I have Exchange running on SBS 2003 and have a potential problem with email receiving.

At the moment I have 1 internal domain (domain.local) and 2 external internet domains (domain1.com and domain2.com) and 2 email accounts ([email protected] and [email protected]).

I currently use a POP3 connector to pick up the mail for one of these domains and then route email to the correct account using the POP3 connector routing rules.

I envisage a problem if I update the MX record online so that both my domains receive email directly and I dont know where email sent to "[email protected]" or [email protected]" will go.

I have created 2 users, InfoDomain1 and InfoDomain2 and these have their primary email addresses set to [email protected] and [email protected] respectively.

So if a user sends an email to [email protected] will it go to [email protected] because the name before the "@" i.e. "info" is the same?

Hope someone can shed some light as I'm sure I'm making things overly complicated.

    many thanks

    aboyce

Re: 2 email domains, 2 users, 1 email address

If you want Exchange to receive email for another domain then you need to tell it that you have another domain.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/268838

After doing that, you will then need to ensure that the accounts have email addresses in both domains.

If you don't add the domain to recipient policies then Exchange will reject the message.

I've done that, and both domains receive email no problems

I'm just worried that exchange doesnt really care what comes after the "@" and if mail gets sent to [email protected] or [email protected] then it will only route the email to the user that has the address [email protected]*

      confused...

Exchange will route the email to the mailbox that has that email address on it.
If you want the email for other domain to go to another mailbox then you remove the address from the first account and place it on the second account.
