  • Thread : Outlook crashing for one user only with Event ID 26

I have one user fortunately, he is the president of the company unfortunately for me, that has this issue.
He was giving a new computer with a fresh install because of Outlook crashing with event ID: 26 and it has followed him to his new computer.

    Code :

    1. Application popup: OUTLOOK.EXE - Application Error: The instruction at "0x7c91b1fa" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The memory could not be "written".
    2.
    3. Click on OK to terminate the program
    4. Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Outlook displays a message in the reading pane:

"Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Office microsoft office Outlook could not access the specified folder location. Another application closed unexpectedly while using your Personal Folder File 'C:\Documents and Settings\President\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.ost' To prevent damage to your Personal Folders file, it will not be available until you close all applications currently using it."

    Steps taken:
He was given a new computer with a fresh install of Windows XP and Office 2003 with all the updates via WSUS. The new computer has the same exact issues.
I ran the OST repair utility.
    I repaired Office.
I created a new profile on his machines and copied them over.
He was getting SideBySide errors related to C++, I resolved those by installing the Visual Studio Microsoft_Visual_Studio 2005 C++ redistributals.
There are no add-ins enabled within Outlook.
    There are no PST files.

The Exchange server is running in cached mode. We all have Motorolla Motorola Q9m's to access Exchange as well, the phones never sync from the PC, they sync via the internet.

We have been fighting with this for a month.

    Few Q's

What plugins are there in Outlook?
    What AV on the machine?
Can you open his mailbox using your outlook both with a new profile or by giving yourself rights and opening it additionally?
Can you Exmerge the mailbox out and open it without issue?
Does it crash in non-cached mode?
    cheers
    Andy

If you are going to copy and paste from another site, at least remove their advertising code from the post before you do so.

I have modified the question to remove it.

There are no plugins in Outlook.
We are using Sophos antivirus - I am disallowing it to scan the OST file.
I will grant myself rights to open his mailbox now in Outlook to see if it bombs.
I have not used Exmerge on the mailbox yet.
I have not tried in non-cached mode, there are GPOs in place setting outlook in cahced mode, I could copy the GPO, filter it for him and removed cached mode if it will help.

I setup his Mailbox in Outlook for myself.
The crashing is intermittent, it occurs once or 4 times a day with no rhyme or reason.

Are there any events on the Exchange or client machine around the time of the crashes? Does the AV update or anything like that? Does he have any different GPOs applied?
It may be worth excluding him from the GPOs temporarily if they aren't security related to see if they make a difference.
              cheers

There are no events on the Exchange box or the client machine beside the application popup with event ID 26.
I am going to copy the GPO for Office and remove cached mode and see if that helps.
I have not used the exmerge utility yet, nor have I ever.
Can I run exmerge against the First Storage Group?

Sure. You could just export it and try opening the PST elsewhere anyway to start with. It is a fantastic tool.

There is a doc that comes with the download.

                    Thanks Andy!
I believe that the mailbox is corrupt. ESEUTIL defrag has never been ran on the server that the other Administrators are aware of. That's a quite a while, 5 years at least of adding and deleting mailboxes, it was also upgraded from 2000, I was not here then, I am new, so who knows if they defragged it then.
I am going to export his mail, delete his mailbox and import it in the hope his errors go away.
This weekend I am going to run ESEUTIL to check the integrity and ISINTIG fix if needed.

                      No worries.

I would have a read of this before you do anything major plus obviously backups are paramount!

This shows you how much free space you could regain with an offline defrag.
