  • Exch.2003 services not running after reboot

    Hello,

I've an issue with one sbs 2003 std box. After i reboot the server, the exchange services ( expecially the information store and the system attendant ) are not running.

The exchange is updated to sp2, and to the latest ms updates fix.

In the event log i see those records:

    In the SYSTEM pane:

    Source: Service Control Manager
    Event ID: 7024
The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated with service-specific error 0 (0x0).

    In the APPLICATION pane:

    Source: MSExchangeFBPublish
    Event ID: 8197
Error initializing session for virtual machine MECALLSRV01. The error number is 0x8004011d. Make sure Microsoft Exchange Store is running.

    Source: MSExchangeTransport
    Event ID: 907
Failed to initialize directory access. The error code is in the data portion of this event.

If i wait 10 mins, and start the services manually, they start flawlessly ...

Google and Technet referes to a missing key\wrong permission in the hklm\software\ms\exchange\setup registry key....but i've the key with the right acl's, OR to Antivirus program locking the db....i have Trend micro excluding the MDBDATA folder so that's not my case.

I've configured a delayed restart of the services, in case of failure in this way:

    Exchange information store:
    1st failure: restart service
    2nd failure: restart service
    Timeout: 5 mins

    Exchange MTA stacks:
    1st failure: restart service
    2nd failure: restart service
    Timeout: 3 mins

    Exchange Routing Engine:
    1st failure: restart service
    2nd failure: restart service
    Timeout: 2 mins

but the exchange services doesn't start at all.

Any of you have any suggestions ?

    Many Thanks in advance

    Stefano

While I appreciate that you have configured the AV software correctly, I would still be looking to rip it out. Any problems with Exchange that is the first thing to go.

Ensure that the server has been configured correctly. Any DNS servers listed on the network card should be to the server itself, no external DNS servers should be listed anywhere. If you need to use external DNS Servers then these should be configured as forwarders in the DNS Server applet.

i have those dns in the DC nic.

      dns1: itself
dns2: another dns located in the lan
      dns3: external isp dns server
dns4: external isp dns server - secondary

the dns service installed on the server that suffer the issue, had already the external isp dns as forwarders.

Remove the ISP DNS serves from the DNS, they are not required and should not be there.
Is the second DNS server also a domain controller?

ok, i'm gonna delete the external dns references in the nic.

The second server is also a domain controller.

            Hi

Excuse me for butting in and adding my 10 pence worth...

Please ensure your DNS Servers are actually in Sync.

What I mean here is that DNS1 is your primary server and it is working ok, DNS 2 is actually receiving copies of the Zone from DNS 1, you should have the same records if they are updating correctly.

Also for the sake of reliability, pop in your ISP's DNS Servers into the Forwarders tab within DNS Server Settings. This was explained in a previous post and is good advice !

Exchange is a real nightmare if DNS is not functioning 100%.

Try and reboot the server and see what happens ?
