  • Correct method of assigning permissions to a group mailbox.

    Hello

What is the correct method of assigning permissions to a group mailboxes?

Why I ask is becuase there more than one why of assigning permissions to a mailbox.

In AD you have the exchange tab with mailbox rights and you have the security tab and on the mailbox itself you can add users with permission levels. Which one should I be using?

I need to setup access to a group mailbox (where users currently have full mailbox access) where the users can relpy, send as, read but not move or delete.

Where do you assign the permissions - under mailbox rights, the security tab or on the mailbox itself? Currently permissions are assigned under all options !

    Hope you can help !

As far as i know it is all done within th mailbox rights tab. Ihave never done it anywhere else & it works fine for me.

and you have the security tab
The security Tab is only found on the DC's Active Directory found in Start/programs/administrative tools/active directory users & computers OR start/run/dsa.msc

Its isnt found in Exchanges Active directory, found in Start/programs/Microsoft Exchange/Active Directory Users & Computers.

and on the mailbox itself you can add users with permission levels.
Not sure where you mean there. I cannot find that on mine. You mean in Exchange Manager? Doesnt look like Ive needed it anyway.

Hope that helps in some way.

Sorry, should of made myself clear - if you add the mailbox in Outlook right click on the mailbox and select properties under the permissions tab you can add users.

You can specific level of permission such as owner reviewer etc.

As there are 3 different areas to add permissions would you the mailbox rights is the correct place to assign permissions ?

If so what are the others used for?

Re: Correct method of assigning permissions to a group mailbox.

There are three and a bit methods of providing access to the mailbox.

        1. In ADUC granting "Full Mailbox" access. That provides full mailbox. It also used to grant Send As permissions, but if the server has been kept up to date that is no longer the case.

        2. In ADUC again, the permissions Send As AND Receive As. This can be granted to the mailbox or...
2a. This can be granted in the Exchange org, usually at the server or store level.

        3. On the Mailbox itself through Outlook.
Granting permissions through Outlook will never provide Send As permissions.

As for the "correct" way, that depends on what you want to achieve.

For Blackberry use I usually use 2a.
For access to the full mailbox for a group I use 1.
For access to an individual folder/s in a specific mailbox I use 3.

        Different methods for different purposes.

        Simon.
