  • upgrading to exchange 2003

    Hi

Searched the web and find two differing opinions. I have server 2000 running exchange 2000 can I upgrade to exchange 2003 without upgrading the server operating system?

Some sites say yes providing you are running sp3 or above but some facilities wont work and others say upgrade both

    thanks

Why not upgrade the OS as well?

      Re: upgrading to exchange 2003

Times is hard and the client is currently extrmemly cost concious to say the least. Hence the thought of upgrading exchange rather than the operating system as well. If that were the case I'd probably consisider SBS permium

      cheers

Thanks those links really were usefull infact prevented an egg on face situation The reason for the upgrade was that on 2000 16gb has been reached so the standard 2003 exchange would be no good.

Off to cost up 2003 enterprise

          thanks Ian

            Re: upgrading to exchange 2003

            Hi

this is where I get confused the links in the previous were wonderful and stated that 2003 standard had a 16gb limit but this link

            http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822440

states that with sp2 it is bigger.

So I now assume that the standard version will do?

            all rather confusing really

              Re: upgrading to exchange 2003

Exchange 2003 with SP2 will allow you to set a limit of 75gb.
You cannot purchase Exchange 2003 Enterprise edition, you have to purchase Exchange 2007 and use downgrade rights. However Exchange 2007 Standard allows unlimited database sizes, therefore it may be cheaper to purchase a new Windows 2003 64 bit machine and Exchange 2007 standard than Exchange 2007 enterprise edition.

And while I appreciate the costs involved, an upgrade to Windows 2003 is strongly recommended.

Although if the users are below 75, why not go to SBS 2003? It will almost certainly be cheaper than Exchange 2003 the full product (which you can't buy, so my notes above apply). Plus if you put Software Assurance on it, then when SBS 2008 is released in a few weeks you will get that for free. Furthermore due to a quirk in the pricing, for most people it will be cheaper to purchase SBS 2003 and SA rather than waiting for SBS 2008 and buying fresh. I would also say you probably don't need SBS 2003 Premium, unless you really want the pain in the neck ISA Server.

              Simon.
