  • mailbox account on wrong server

    Hi there,

I am having a very weird problem...

On active directory on the users properties,. exchange general its showing that the mailbox is stored on exchangeserver1.

While I can verify that the mailbox is stored in exchangeserver2.

    How can i change this?

The user is unable to check their email because of this.

    Thanks in advanced.

Re: mailbox account on wrong server

Move it to the other server using Move Mailbox.
Then move it back. Wait at least 30 minutes between the change.

I even tried using exmerge, it connects fine to mailserver1 but not to mailserver2, it recognises the number of mailboxes but it errors out with permissions, i checked the security permissions on the server for exchange on mailserver2 and its all ok, send as and recieve as are granted for the administrator.

Re: mailbox account on wrong server

Can you disconnect the user from his mailbox then re-connect?

          OR

Have a look in ADSIEdit.msc (links in sticky in Misc Forum).

Domain should show your AD structure, find the user and right click properties.
The HomeMDB property should show the current location.
          Is it incorrect?

When a mailbox is moved it updates this property. I can't explain why it would be wrong in your scenario but, for example, Exchange 2007 SCR copies a database as is and brings it up on a different server, clearly this property would be wrong so as part of the failover process it gets updates to show the correct location. The move-mailbox cmdlet for example has a "-configurationonly" option which does this.
I realise this is on 2003 but the idea is the same.

Editing using ADSIEdit is very risky in the wrong hands but I would be tempted to copy the properties there and then change them so they are correct if you can't get to it any other way.
          cheers
          Andy

Thank you Andy, will try it out, that might sound like the solution though, will let you know if it works.

Also don't forget that there is a specific deny for domain admins etc. Have you removed that?

Glad it worked. Would be interesting to find out why it was wrong though.
                      cheers

Re: mailbox account on wrong server

I think it went wrong because of the folowing:

i was trying to move the mailbox from server1 to server2.
while it was moving the AD rebooted for some reason (power failure and ups couldnt handle it), when it came back on the mailbox was moved but the record still showed server1 as being the mailbox location.

                        :P
