  • RPC over HTTP/S Help??

    Hi,

I'm not a newbie by a long shot, but have found that configuring Exchange Server 2003 w/ Enterprise Server 2003 for RPC over HTTP/S to be quite a daunting task.

I've followed everything to the letter contained in http://www.petri.com/configure_rpc_o...gle_server.htm and I still cannot get any Outlook 2003 client to connect. OWA is working great, but since this server is now in a colo, testing it over a lan connection is not possible.

Are there any suggestions, or any logs typically placed by this setup somewhere on the server that I'm not seeing. I've even tried to connect with Outlook 2007 via RPC over HTTP/S and it just won't work.

I'd be happy to provide some specific data about the server, certificate, etc. if someone can help.

    Thanks very much,
    Steve

Are you using a self made certificate or did you get a real one?

If you search this forum for rpc over http then you will find a multitude of possible solutions especially if you include SEMBEE as a username (use the Advanced Search options).

Hi, I got a real one from Go Daddy and all of the FQDN's match up perfectly.

      Thanks

        Re: RPC over HTTP/S Help??

It is unfortunate that a LAN connection isn't possible, as that is the first thing to test.

Have you confirmed certificate acceptance using the URL https://host.example.net/rpc ?
You should only get an authentication prompt - which will not work (which is normal).

The usual problems with this feature though are registry settings and authentication mismatch. If you are trying to use basic in the client and only have integrated set on the virtual directory that will cause problems.

          Hi Simon,

Yes, it works as it should

          https://exchange-01.nabcor.com/rpc

I have gone over every setting possible, the registry settings are set as they should be, etc.

The server netbios name is nabcor-1 and the fqdn of the server itself is nabcor-1.nabcor.com.

DNS is set on this box correctly, even though the nabcor.com domain is handled authoritatively by a FreeBSD server.

The godaddy ssl cert matches the public fqdn of exchange-01.nabcor.com

This is really perplexing but thanks very much for any help you can offer.

          Steve

What about the authentication settings that you are using in Outlook? Do they match the virtual directory?

Yes, the Outlook client settings are:

              Microsoft Exchange Server: exchange-01.nabcor.com

              Username: (the account's username)

              Connection Settings:

              Use this URL ...: exchange-01.nabcor.com
Mutually authenticate ... is checked (I've tried it both checked and unchecked)

              Principal name....: msstd:exchange-01.nabcor.com

Both HTTP checkboxes are checked. (tried all permutations of this as well)

              Basic Authentication

              -----

I really don't know what else to do at this point...

Thanks so much for your help in trying to help me figure this out!

                Re: RPC over HTTP/S Help??

So is basic authentication enabled on the rpc virtual directory?

                Simon.

Hi, yes it is. Integrated is also enabled, but that should be ok, right?

                  Thanks,

                    Re: RPC over HTTP/S Help??

Having both authentication types enabled is fine and is what I do as standard.

Is this a frontend/backend scenario or a single server? Separate domain controllers?

Basically this feature fails for one of three reasons

                    authentication mismatch
                    certificate acceptance
                    registry settings wrong

If you have cleared the first two then it has to be the third.

                    Simon.

                      Simon,

This is just a single server configuration.

                      Thanks,

                        You tried the RPCNoFrontEnd tool?

Sure did .. that's a pretty awesome tool, by the way.

Well I prefer to do the registry manually, and my settings are slightly different to those that Daniel has on this site. If you have used the tool then I might suggest a manual change.

                              Simon / Andy,

Thanks very much for your help. After not seeing this for an entire day, and then coming back to it, the problem indeed wasn't on the server side at all.

There seems to be much conflicting information regarding setup on the Outlook clients. After trying every single iteration using Basic Authentication, what worked on the first try, was using NTLM with both fast / slow check boxes ticked.

That makes me crazy, because I didn't see Simon's article on that until just now, tried it, and it worked... Doh! (in the classic Homer Simpson voice).

                              Thanks again!!!
