  • Exchange Offline Defragmentation

Hello all! I have a unique (I think) issue that I would like to share and hopefully resolve. Our Exchange 2003 Enterprise server database is about 44 GB in size. We recently, through archive and deleting etc., freed up over 15 GB of white space in the database. However, when we tried to run the offline deffragmentation we received the JET -1018 error. OK, so we ran the repair utility instead (eseutil /p). It ran through and completed successfully. So, great, now we could run the defrag. We plugged in the command (eseutil /d) and wham! our database went from 44GB to 1 MB. YIKES
Does anyone have any ideas why this would happen?
    My idea is this:
We never really got a good online defragmentation that completed successfully. It had always been interrupted. Also, we never really waited long enough for the retention period to expire. So, we tried to run the offline defrag too soon.
Our plan now is to allow more time for our online maintenance to complete successfully, give enough time for the retention period to expire and then try the offline defrag again.
Is my thinking correct here? Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    T

offline defragementation is not recommended, can make one more store and move mailboxes...

    /p is for hard recovery..

If you are on Enterprise edition don't bother with an offline defrag. Follow the method I outlined in the thread linked to above - new store, new database and drop the original. Zero downtime, zero risk.

        Simon.
I'd never thought of doing it that way to be honest so thanks for the tip.

We currently use PerfectDisk for looking after this kind of thing and it really does work well.

Sembee thanks for the tip. That seems to be more efficient
So, in essence, doing this will reclaim all the space we wanted to gain AND give us a fresh database file? How sweet!

Thanks again...we'll give it a try.
