  • How to properly add second exch2k3 server ?

    All -

I have a single mail server and i'd like to introduce another mail server to handle a different subset of production mailboxes and handle routing of mail for a particular group of people who will be geographically closer to this new box.

I have an AD 2003 domain and a child domain where this new mail server will be placed. e.g

harry.local. - 2 dc's and one mail server with RUS policies for both domains

    child.harry.local - 2 dc's only.

Is there a way to force certain users/groups/sites within AD to use a particular SMTP box for outbound traffic ? is that even a recommended best practice ?

looking for advice as to how to properly introduce the second mail server into the environment and setup incoming and smtp routing to be handled efficiently

    Hi,

Do you want to use seprate SMTP mail relay for new exchange box, and going to use RGC?

This is what routing groups are for.
You will need to create a second routing group, and move the second server in to that routing group. Then create a routing group connector to link the two routing groups.

Finally create an SMTP connector in each routing group, with the scope set to Routing Group, not entire org and set the connector as appropriate to route email.

        Thanks.

I'm still torn whether i would just use the server as a relay or actually host some production mailboxes.

I have roughly 350 mailboxes and growing, what do you guys think as far as growth and design goes ? I'm thinking just having one box handle all the mailboxes and just introduce another exchange server for mail relay and other benefits i just am not apprised of..

If you don't move mailboxes to the server then it will be of no use to you. Certainly wouldn't be used as a relay server because Outlook when connected to Exchange as an Exchange client (ie not POP3/IMAP) doesn't send email via a relay server, it sends the email via the Exchange server the mailbox is located on.

Whether you should be looking at moving the mailboxes is really something that you have to decide for yourself. If you don't then I fail to see the point in deploying a second server at a second location.

            Thanks.

So, i'm going to move mailboxes.

That being said, on this new server, once i add it to my existing exchange organization, i would create another mailbox store ? and then run exmerge from exch server 1 to exchsrvr 2 and move the mailboxes i would like to move ?

What happens if i want users to receive e-mail from two smtp namespaces ?

            for example

            [email protected]

            [email protected]

and i'd like all mail to be collected by one mailbox.

            Thanks,

First - forget about exmerge. That has nothing to do with this procedure. If the servers are in the same Forest then you will not use exmerge.

When you install the server it will get another mailbox store. Before you move any mailboxes you need to replicate the public and system folders to the new server, otherwise you will see a performance impact.

You also need to decide how you are going to route email traffic and set that up. Whether to route email through one site or both sites. Also look at incoming email and consider whether you have to purchase additional licenses for antivirus and antispam.

Moving mailboxes is the last thing that you have to do.

As for email addresses, you can have as many as you like. However you can only have one as the OUTBOUND address, which is the default address on the account.
