  • Cannot send emails with Large attachments in Exchange 2003

Please could somebody, anybody help. A user needs to be able to send 4x3MB attachments in an email to four different recipients on a regular basis. This will be
sent as one email to the four recipients.

I configured Exchange settings as the following.

Message Delivery 'Global Settings',Sending Message Size is to 'No
    Limits'.

On SMTP Virtual Server, set the 'Limit Message Size to 40000' and the Session Size the same. This was set to this limit so I could test the settings myself by sending a 32mB attachment to another email I have that is set to allow attachments of that size.

No System Policies are set as far as I can see.

No limits to the Mailbox Store are preventing this. There is plenty of Space left.

There are no 'allowed sizes' set on the connector and I have even set my
user account in the AD domain to have an allowed send size of 40000KB.

When sending an email from my user account, which is in the same organisation as the user, the below comes back after 3 seconds.

[B]Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

    Subject: FW: Test
    Sent:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'Name of Intended Recipient' on 7/9/2008 10:23 AM
This message is larger than the current system limit or the
recipient's mailbox is full. Create a shorter message body or remove
attachments and try sending it again.
    <Name of our Domain #5.2.3>

Has anyone got any ideas. I have been looking at this for a few hours
and urgently need assistance. I have even got the user to try sending their email again and they get the above back.

    Thanks.

Does the user have specific limits on their mailbox rather than using the global settings?

Re: Cannot send emails with Large attachments in Exchange 2003

      Thanks for the response.

The mailbox limit is set on the Mailbox Store proerties. The size of the User's mailbox is 150MB and the limit is set to 450MB whereas users can no longer send when their mailbox is that size.

They can send emails to the recipients when there isn't an attachment or a smaller attachment. It seems to prevent sending with attachments 10MB or larger.

The message size limit is a setting that Exchange server caches (default 2 hours). How long have you waited after making the change when sending your test message?

Have you checked all of these?

            Thanks for all the comments.

Have carried out all the points in the article on Microsoft's site.

Interesting regarding the 2 hour cache. That may be the issue.

Just tried sending a 10MB attachment to a recipient and still getting the below back.

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

The setting has been set to 15000KB for 5 hours. Ignore the time above, I have just re-sent one 10 minutes ago.

            Thanks once again.

Here's info on the cache. AFAIK, this is valid for Exchange 2000, 2003, and 2007:

                Thanks for posting.

Have restarted the Information Store and retried sending a 10MB attachment and I get the same message. The article refers to the quota of mailbox stores for storage of emails rather than referring to the limit on the email size to off-site locations. Not sure what else it can be. If I send a 3MB attachment, it sends ok.

are you sending this to an outside email source? They could be denying the email.
What do I know, I am only 26.

Re: Cannot send emails with Large attachments in Exchange 2003

Yes. Sending the email to my own email domain that is set to allow it. The notification I get back states the domain name of the domain, I am sending the email from. That makes me think it was an internal issue.

It really baffles me as I have followed and tested loads of scenarios as detailed in this article:

                    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322679

But still no luck. Send a 10MB attachment, you get the message back. Send something smaller and it sends ok. I have even allowed my user account in AD to send emails of up to 20MB, which I always thought would override any system policy.

That's one thing i haven't tried. What is the process to do that. Would be good to give it a go.

                        Thanks

The fact that your domain is on the NDR does not mean that the problem is with your server. That is simply where the NDR was generated. It is best practise to reject the email at the point of delivery and therefore force the sending server to generate the NDR.

You also should be aware that least restrictive wins. Therefore if the limit is on the SMTP virtual server of 10mb then that is the largest size you will be able to send to external recipients. The rule is to restrict down, not open up. Set the higher limits on the global and server settings and then set the restrictions on the user accounts if you want them to have lower limits. Use something like admodify.net to change the users in bulk.

                          Simon.

Thanks for the Post Simon. I understand where you are coming from. If a maximum send limit isn't set, would that be ruled out. Is there a default that Exchange assumes should be set? I have configured the SMTP Virtual server to allow up to 20MB and still I can not send an email. The email doamin it is going to is also set to allow attachments of that size as it is my own.

                            Thanks

There are any number of places that restrictions can be set. On the user, on global settings, on the SMTP virtual server. Then you can get limits on the size of the message in Antivirus or antispam software and on some firewalls that have SMTP scanning on them. You need to check all of them.
