  • SMTP Metabase updating with Exchange 03 SP2

    Hi,

We have an issue with an Exchange 2003 box where it refuses to accept any new domains we add to it. I.E. if we add in bigfish.com (just made that up so apologies if it exists) and populate certain users with the email address then I still get a 550 5.7.1 address. All existing domains work correctly.
I have had a look using metaedit at the smtp service in IIS and can see on a working server that adding a domain into the recipient policies adds it into the metabase however on the faulty server this doesn't happen (there are no errors in the event log for this apart from the failed relay message). Would appreciate any thoughts.
    cheers
    Andy

Sounds like the IIS metabase is corrupt.
Unfortunately the only reliable way to resolve that is to uninstall IIS and reinstall it. However that will break Exchange. The supported way to fix it is to remove Exchange, then remove IIS, reinstall IIS and reinstall Exchange.

The unsupported, don't try this at home, you didn't get this from me, I am not to blame if it goes wrong, use at your own risk, method is

Stop and disable the Exchange (and anything related to Exchange) services and reboot.
    Confirm Exchange services stopped.
    Remove IIS.
    Reboot.
    Reinstall IIS.
    Reboot
    Reinstall Exchange 2003
Reinstall Exchange 2003 service packs in the same order they were applied. If you went straight to SP2, then install SP2, if you went SP1, SP2, then do that. Followed by the updates for Exchange and IIS from Microsoft Update.

The Exchange services stay disabled until their status is changed by the Exchange installation process.

The above does work, but don't come running if it doesn't work for you.

    Simon.

Cheers Simon, I appreciate the reply.
I have a p2v of this in a POC to test so I will give it a go there first. Thanks again.

I am having the same issue. Adding another domain to the Recipient Policy is not updating the Metabase. I did find this article however. I will give it a try and post back.

That looks very interesting. I haven't been able to get back there yet so someone else is having a look. Will get them to try this too.
          cheers
