  • Bkup error on exch2K3

    hi all,

    OS: Win2K3 - Exch2K3
    Bkup SW: Bkup Exec 9.1

I am getting an error msg when performing the daily backup.

Backup - \\<exch-server>>\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group Error
Unable to open \ because it is currently being backed up by another process.
Database or database element is corrupt

I have googled the error and found this. I have unticked Shawdow Copy Components\user data as suggested, but the error still shows.

Has anyone come across such error?

    Comments are appreciated.

    Re: Bkup error on exch2K3

Have you tried creating a new job and just selecting the stores?
I assume you don't have anything else trying to backup the server at the same time? Windows backup or another BE server?

THis is the same document but shows the backup options a bit better

This is a bit more info as well.

ESEUtil may be worth a look as well

Hi Andy, thanks for the reply.
I will try tonight to see whether it works.
It is a small environment, and we do a full daily backup (exchange + DCs) same job, that's around 150Gb data backup only.
I have not tried creating a new job yet.

            HI,

Have you configure VSS with exchange database in job, of so remove VSS and try.

How about running a manual backup during a different time period?
Can you check scheduled tasks/NT Backup as well just to make sure NT backup isn't running.
Are there any entries in the event log between and hour or so before or after about things happening that may be relevant?
              cheers

Number 1 thats an old copy of Vertias. Veritas Backup in my humble opinion always has a good few bugs in it. Anyway i digress. I believe the "CLUE" is in the log Try backing it up with NTbackup to a folder at a diffrent time and see if that completes correctly. Im assuming your mounted database is working correctly and therefore we can ignore the red herring in the log that says the database is corrupt. Veritas by default also uses the MS VSS writers to backup the exchange store from a shadow copy. But you can also use Run this command from a command prompt to ensure none of the MS VSS writers are in an error state: vssadmin list writers. You can assume that if the NTbackup works fine there is nothing wrong with the Vss exchange writer. Also are you using the advanced open file option or MS VSS to backup up the store?
