  • Exchange 2003 Standard running on a Win2k3 enterprise server

I have exchange 2003 standard edition running on a Windows 2003 server enterprise edition w/ 8GB of RAM. I ran the best practice tool for exchange and it told me it needed to have the /3GB switch which is fine. It also recommended that I force exchange to only use a max. of 4GB of RAM. I went ahead and followed the best practice recommendations but now i think i probably should not have because i'm only using 4GB of RAM rather than 8.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Exchange 2000/2003 is a 32 bit application so with more than 4gb RAM it will have problems. You gain nothing from throwing RAM at Exchange 2003. Exchange cannot use it. I have actually seen problems with Exchange having more than 4gb of RAM and do not specify an Exchange 2003 server with more than 2gb of RAM. I have been on site and actually removed RAM due to performance issues and seen them go away - and get funny looks.
