  • Cannot Send/Recieve External E-mails

    OS: Windows 2003 RD2 SP2
    Network: Domain

Problem: Cannot send or receive e-mails from/to external accounts.

I just installed the Mail Server Role and created two mailboxes for two users. I have Microsoft Outlook for each user properly connected and the users can send and receive e-mail to/from each other.

I also purchased a domain name from Yahoo.
The domain name under p3server.msc matches the name I purchased from Yahoo (ei. hotday2222.com).

I went to Yahoo's domain controler and set the following A-record:
mail.hotday2222.com to point to my IP address.
and set the following MX record:
mail.hotday2222.com with priority 10 (highest priority)

I thought the above steps would allow my server to run as a mail server for my hotday2222.com; however, I've been unsuccessful. I made the changes at yahoo within the past 8 hours, and yahoo says changes might take as long as 72 hours to propagate through the internet. Is this the reason it is not working, or am I missing some other important steps?

I searched all over the internet but can't find anything with the details needed at my level - I"m new at this and might have missed very basic steps.

    Thank you in advance.

How is your exchange server set to send mail out to the world??

Do you use a smarthost?? or DNS??

Have you added the correct rules in your firewall to allow the exchange server to send/receive email??

I am not sure. Where would I find this info?

As per the firewall issue, I have port 110 open. Is that enough?

Nope. You need to have port 25 open in order to send mail via smtp.

Me thinks you should really hire a consultant to do this for you as exchange is a bit of a beast.

Not too hard to setup. You just need to know what to do.

Mods can this be moved to the Exchange forum.

I still cannot send e-mails to the outside world. I can sent internally and receive externally but cannot send externally.

Can you telnet to port 25 of any external machines...

            telnet maila.microsoft.com 25

If the cursor just sits there then it is blocked.
Could be your firewall, AV software or your ISP.

                Re: Cannot Send/Recieve External E-mails

                To clarify.
I can send and receive e-mail internally and I can receive e-mail externally; however, I cannot send e-mail externally.
The only port I have opened on both the OS and the router is port 25.

What I find confusing is...how will the server know where to send external emails since I didn't not set such setting anywhere?

I understand why it is able to receive external e-mail - since I went to my domains register and pointed the MX records to my IP, but where is the reverse process.

I know my questions are elmentary to some, but I've been spinning my wheels for 2 days on this.

                  Re: Cannot Send/Recieve External E-mails

                  HI,

                  1) Since you have firewall, open bidirectoinal smtp(25) between your yahoo domain & firewall.

                  2) configure exchange smarthost & point it to your firewall. so forewall will take care of internall and externall mail flow.

                  Rgds

Just like your domain has an MX record so does everyone elses. Your server is likely using DNS to resolve the mail exchange record for a particular domain and then using that to send the mail to the correct server.
                    cheers

                      THank you everyone.
I got it working, but still don't understand how the server is sending e-mails.
WIll have to read up on it.
