  • Exch2k3 Public Folder stores keep associating with first server

    Hi Experts,

Does anyone know why whenever I build a new exchange server the Public Folder store automatically associates itself with the PF tree of the first exchange server in our organisation?

Our first Exch server is in the U.S. and consequently our UK Public Folders have to be administered under their PF tree - I have a requirement to dis-associate this and makes sure it doesn't happen when we bring our Australian and South African offices into the domain. We want each territory to have a PF store associated to a PF tree on their local server. Replication is not a requirement.

    Any advice welcome!

I don't think what you want to do is possible.
Public Folders are an org wide setting. While you can have a public folder store for each server, it cannot be isolated.

I would also disagree that replication is not required. If you have more than one Exchange 2003 server you must replicate some content - the system folders - which are stored in the public folder store. I would recommend the replication of the OAB folders, and the schedule plus free/busy folders as a minimum.

That's a shame - presumably we have no way of administering our public folders if the US server goes down for any reason? Seems a little odd for Microsoft to structure it that way.

Should just clarify that there isn't any need to replicate shared Public Folders that we've created, I've left the OAB and free/busy as they are.

Does anyone know if Exch Svr 2k7 is any different when it comes to this sort of situation?

Are you using Outlook clients with cached mode? If you are then you should be replicating the OAB as the OAB is only generated in one place.
You can administrate any public folders, there is no requirement on a specific server. When you start ESM, simply right click on Public Folders and choose Connect To and select the server.

Don't expect anything to be different with Exchange 2007. Microsoft are trying to kill off Public Folders, and if anything public folder management in Exchange 2007 is worse than 2003.
