  • STORE.EXE only using 512mb

Dell 2900 Quad Core 2.6 with 4GB RAM
    Windows Standard 2003 R2 + SP2 and fully patched
    Exchange Server 2003 SP2
    Booting with /3GB and /USERVA=3030

This is usually the opposite of the problems people have in here, but STORE.EXE on this server is only using 512mb of RAM. I have a few users with really large mailboxes complaining that Exchange is slow. I went through and did all the memory tweaking and the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer.

I would love to allocate 1.5-2GB of memory to Exchange.....is there a way to do that?

remove the /3gb switch and the /USERVA=3030
Also, how large are those mailboxes?

      Re: STORE.EXE only using 512mb

I should have said I originally had it set without the /3GB and /USERVA=3030 switch and they were complaining about speed. I added the switches and rebooted. No difference in memory usage of store.exe

Most mailboxes are between 400-600mb, but there are at least 10-12 in excess of 4gb and some as high as 8gb. Some of those larger mailboxes are opened by multiple people as well who also open up large boxes.

Just under 50 total mailboxes as well.

        Don't laugh.
Remove 2gb of RAM. Exchange 2003 doesn't like RAM. Give it more than 2gb it doesn't know what to do with it (unless you have a Symantec product installed).

Mailbox size isn't an issue. Where the problem can occur is item count in a specific folder. Ideally no folder should have more than 1500 items in it. The MS Exchange team have just put a blog post out on this: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/20...03/448958.aspx

I have Symantec Mail Security 6.05 installed, not to mention Symantec Anti Virus 10, Backup Exec 12 and Backup Exec System Recovery 8.

Any other Symantec products I should install?

            Re: STORE.EXE only using 512mb

            You missed my sarcasm.
If you had Symantec products on there I usually find they are using more RAM than Exchange. Their AV software seems to get more bloated with every revision. It is like the developers make it more bloated so that their victims, sorry customers, think they are getting more for their money.

Oh the intertubes.....how sarcasm can be lost.

I do agree with their latest releases getting more and more bloated. I won't go past 10 with the workstation AV. 11 is a joke. Older machines come to a screeching halt when that is installed.

I found a few more pages on memory tweaks for Exchange. I do need to talk to users about the 10k items in their inbox. Thanks for the article, I will forward that over to my people.

                Hi,

Hope you have removed excluded recommended folders from A/V, which some time kill the exchange server and enforcing exchange to run slow....

I read about SlowFindRow and FindFastRow optimization on that blog, but how it is done?

I'm wondering if it will help with my people who have 8k-40k items in folders. I tell them to clean up, but they don't listen.....
