  • intermittent email issue.

    Hi all,

Iím really hoping someone can help.

6 months ago I rebuilt our exchange server and all has been working well until a few months ago.

The problem is intermittently emails from internal users are not reaching the external recipients located all over the world.

The really annoying thing is, the only way I know if emails do not get through is by users saying they havenít had a response OR by rebooting the exchange server. I say rebooting the exchange server because itís the only way an NDR is generated.

As the picture shows, looking at the Message Tracking Center, the email trail stops at ďSMTP: Message Submitted to Advanced QueuingĒ until I rebooted the server on 21:15 02/06/2008 then it continues the process.

BT is our ISP and they say the MX record and reverse DNS is set up correctly and we are not on a black list.

What Iím confused about it why itís intermittent, one day emails to a specific person can all go through but on another day they donít?

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

    Tom.

    Re: intermittent email issue.

    Are you using a smarthost?
How many emails per hour do you send roughly?

How long are you waiting for the NDRs?

Always worth running the bpa as well.
    cheers
    Andy

        Re: intermittent email issue.

        Sounds like the greylisting bug.
The messages get stuck until the server is rebooted. If the messages are less than 48 hours old they are delivered, everything else is NDR'd.

            Re: intermittent email issue.

Wow, first off thanks for the speedy replies!

1 Are you using a smarthost?
We are not using smarthost, just an exchange 2003 sp2 with windows 2003 sp2 server, going to the internet via ISA 2006.

2 How many emails per hour do you send roughly?
We send about 100 emails out externally everyday so I can check if each individual email gets sent.

3 How long are you waiting for the NDRs?
NDR's are only generated once we reboot the exchange server.

4 Always worth running the bpa as well.
Only not enough RAM, SystemPages set too High BPA and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../aa995801.aspx complaining about performance monitor.

5 also why you are not configuring script
I'm sorry, could you explain in more detail?

6 MS exchange Troubleshooting Assistant - may be this help you
This doesn't show any issues, when checking status of exchange gateway with email addresses that definately have had issues with it shows "Transferred to another server" Their are a few other things it picks up but nothing related i think.

7 hope we havnt missed out eventlogs
looking at the event logs, I can see when an NDR is generated but as that happened when I rebooted they are all at the same time.

                Re: intermittent email issue.

The fact that the messages appeared when you rebooted the server still leads me to believe that this is the greylisting bug - nothing to do with your DNS settings. If DNS etc was wrong then the messages would bounce. Certainly do not think it has anything to do with your Active Directory.

Sembee, i've just read the artical you sent. It sounds exactly that, do you suggest the regiestry fix or MS patch?

The recommendation is both. Remember that you can get Hotfixes for free from Microsoft.
