  • New Exchange server error Unable to bind

    Hello,

I’m trying to move the company Exchange 2003 to a new server with better hardware, I got the new server setup but it returning “unable to bind to the destination server in DNS” errors for outgoing mail. I was mostly following instructions found here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp

    Here is our setup.

    Mail1 - Exchange 2003 SP2 running on windows 2003 sp2

Internal DNS service running on the domain controller which is also using Windows 2003 sp1.

ISA 2004 firewall running on Windows 2003 SP1.

I setup a second Exchange server as mail2 and moved all the mailboxes, public folders and various services to it. I reset all the ISA firewall rules relating to mail1 (smtp in/out, pop3) to include mail2 and changed all the mail exchange (mx) records in the DNS to mail2. The Exchange servers each only use the internal DNS server which has forwarders set for external DNS.

As previously states when I try to send email through mail2 they get stuck in the outgoing queue, yet we are able to receive email with mail2. I temporary set mail1 as mail2 smarthost so outgoing mail is being routed through it for now which is working but we want to retire mail1.

Does anyone know what I miss?

    Thanks.

    Those instructions are mine.
I would have to suspect the ISA server. Can you do nslookups from the server?

    nslookup
    (enter)

    set type=mx

    microsoft.com

I doubt if the problem is with Exchange, but most likely DNS related - the domain controllers cannot make connections out for example.

Re: New Exchange server error Unable to bind

Great instructions, helped the process go smoothly, of course except for this part.

I thought about DNS server being the issue or ISA but if it was then wouldn’t the old exchange server not be working as it uses the same setup?

I wasn’t sure which server you meant to run this on but they all returned with the following output (I changed company IP and server names).

      C:\>nslookup
      Default Server: DNS1.domain.com
      Address: 192.168.123.123

      > set type=mx
      > microsoft.com
      Server: DNS1.Domain.com
      Address: 192.168.123.123

      Non-authoritative answer:
      microsoft.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mailc.microsoft.com
      microsoft.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = maila.microsoft.com
      microsoft.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mailb.microsoft.com

      mailc.microsoft.com internet address = 131.107.115.214
      mailc.microsoft.com internet address = 205.248.106.32
      maila.microsoft.com internet address = 131.107.115.212
      maila.microsoft.com internet address = 205.248.106.64
      mailb.microsoft.com internet address = 131.107.115.215
      mailb.microsoft.com internet address = 205.248.106.30

      Thanks for your help.

That proves that the MX records can be resolved, so there is nothing wrong with the DNS of the machine.
Ensure that you do not have external DNS servers on the SMTP virtual server and no smart host set either.

As for the previous setup working, I find in many cases that undocumented changes were made which cause one server to work, but when that server is changed the new server fails to work.

Re: New Exchange server error Unable to bind

I discovered the issue was the old email server was set as the local bridgehead for the outbound mail connector.

To correct in Exchange System manager > Administrative groups > Routing Groups > First Routing Group > Connectors. Go into Outbound Mail properties and add new server to teh local bridgehead while removing old server.
