  • Mail server rejects incoming mail for second domain

I have a default domain setup and works fine. mydomain.com

I followed the article on shared hosting at msexchange.org. MySecondDomain.com

Can send and receive internally. Can send and receive from within my ISP. By that I mean Verizon hosts my MX and A records for both domains pointing to same IP. I can send and receive between those domains and also to and from my personal Verizon home account.

However when I try to send to my second domain from an external source other than Verizon, I get the below message. Immediate failure.

    Where should I start looking?

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

    Subject: Test
    Sent: 5/14/2008 10:04 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report a specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails, contact your system administrator.
<Unknown address error 550-'5.7.1 Unable to relay for [email protected]' (delivery attempts: 0)>

Thanks for the reply. I am unable to telnet from my location at the moment but the domain is jenkecontracting.com.

You can test the SMTP message flow using the new online tool from Microsoft: https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com

Re: Mail server rejects incoming mail for second domain

The error message that you have received indicates that the server it connected to doesn't recognise the domain. Did you add the domain to recipient policy?
I have seen this where recipient policy doesn't update SMTP correctly.

The fact that the accounts works internally and send doesn't matter. Internal email doesn't rely on the domain being in recipient policy and neither does sending email externally. It is only for inbound email.

Re: Mail server rejects incoming mail for second domain

Okay I think I am getting to the root of the problem here.

MyDomain.com is the root of the forest. A and MX records point to that. Everything is good there.

jenkecontracting is the hosted domain using recipient policy and AD Universal Security Groups. Registered MX and A records pointing to same IP.

                  I followed this tutorial

                  http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/...003_Part1.html

If I try to test the mailbox against MyDomain.com it works. Both email domains are in the user email address properties and jenkecontracting (hosted domain) is the primary.

                  Any thoughts or ideas?

                  Thanks

I will verify the recipient policy when I get back to the office.

                    Thanks.

                      Simon,

Should I have created a new recipient policy or edit the default one? Or does it matter? I think I created a new one.

It doesn't matter if you modify the default or create a new one - as long as it is enabled.

I just looked at the recipient policy and I guess it looks okay. What exactly should I be looking for? I did apply it.

If the recipient policy is not updating the SMTP service correctly there is no way of knowing that is happening - other than things not working.

Try removing the recipient policy and then restart SMTP Service and IIS Admin service in IIS admin.
Then add the policy back in again and repeat the service restart.

                            Simon.

I deleted the Jenke Recipient policy and re-created it, applied it and tested. Didn't work.

Something I tried and should mention, the root domain is say MyDomain.com and the jenkecontracting.com is the "hosted" domain, the test account has both domains in the email address list and jenkecontracting is the primary but when I run the test against [email protected] it works.
