  • OWA SSL not working

This one is bugging me. Single Exchange 2003 + SP2 + all hotfixes on Windows 2003 + SP2 + all hotfixes. SSL for OWA is not working at all. Always getting a "Page cannot be displayed." All testing is done from inside as well as outside in IE7.

http://sever/exchange - No problem. Able to log in and see email
https://server/ - No problem, see the "Under construction" page
https://server/oma - Login prompt, able to see email
https://server/exchange - Page cannot be displayed GRRR

    I have done the following:
    Remove and reinstall IIS
    Reinstall Exchange with /disasterrecovery swtich
    Remove and reinstall Certificate Authority
    Recreate exchange-oma virtural directory

Users are able to use ActiveSync on their WM devices using non-SSL communications. I have not tried installing the new cert on their devices and using SSL syncing.

    Re: OWA SSL not working

Why are you using Certificate Authority? You should be using a commercial SSL certificate so that external connections trust the certificate without any prompts.
My instinct would say that your SSL certificate is corrupt and the SSL session will not establish. Put a commercial trusted SSL certificate in there instead. That doesn't have to mean Verisign and one of their overpriced under specified certificates. GoDaddy do SSL certificates that are trusted by most Windows Mobile devices for US$30. http://DomainsForExchange.net

I don't believe the SSL cert is the problem since other VDirs work. There is something inherently wrong with the Exchange VDir. It's for internal people only, so it's not really a big issue. Once we get it fucntional we will look into getting a commerical cert.

You have SSL set for port 443 in IIS not some other port (or blank?)

Yes, it is set. Other SSL communication is fine. I can see the "Under Construction" page at https://server/ and even get to OMA via https://server/oma.

Where is the virtual directory pointing to? It should be something like this:

            \\.\BackOfficeStorage\domain.com\MBX

also, what options are set on the virtual directory (Read, Write, Directory Browsing, etc.).

If you think it is the virtual directories then reset them.

                Re: OWA SSL not working

I did think it was the virtual directories so I went through the process of removing and reinstalling IIS and then the /disasterrecovery on Exchange. That recreated all the directories and everything in the virtual directories works except for /exchange. Syncing works, OMA works, just not /exchange in SSL.

                  Re: OWA SSL not working

Why did you do a disaster recovery installation of Exchange? That wasn't necessary. The only thing that you needed to do was reset the virtual directories.

However if that doesn't work then I would have to suspect a corruption of the IIS metabase, which means a reinstall of IIS and Exchange.

It was necessary after uninstalling and reinstalling IIS from everything I read....including the link you posted!

                      Re: OWA SSL not working

Reading back - you didn't actually do what I suggested. I suggested a simple reset of the virtual directories, not a complete reinstall of IIS.

When you reinstalled IIS, did you use the previous SSL certificate or did you generate a new one?

                        Re: OWA SSL not working

I should have stated that I tried all the simple stuff like recreating the virtual directories. Uninstalling and reinstalling IIS and Exchange was really last resort.

Could I have an ASP or .NET issue?

                          Re: OWA SSL not working

It would really help if you stated what you had already tried. I doubt if it is an asp.net issue. Considering what you have done I would now be planning to swing the data to a new machine and then rebuild the original machine. Something is quite badly wrong.
Another option would be to build a temporary machine and then see if the problem follows. If it does then it could be something about how you are setting up the machine.
