  • Sending from one Exchange Server to another over VPN tunnel

    Hi,

Our organisaton has an Exchange Server on one network, on its own Domain (Server A) and another Exchange Server on another Network on another doman (Server B).

The two networks are linked over a VPN tunnel.

Currently mail sent from one domain to the other goes via the internet and in again at the other end. As a result we find mail is sometimes intercepted by the MS IMF (the amount of spam we receive and is interecepted means it's not possible to check the spam queue to re-submit the authentic message).

I'd like to configure Exchange server A to send mail to users on to Exchange server B without routing over the internet and back in, ie. to route through the VPN tunnel straight to the other server). Vice versa as well if possible (which I guess it is).

Mail sent from either server to addresses not on one of these two domains should still route out via their own SMTP connectors.

I think I should be using routing group connectors but the impact of doing this incorrectly is rather high, so I wondered if someone could offer me advice ?

    Thanks in advance.

Routing group connectors are only suitable if the servers are in the same Exchange org. If that was the case then you wouldn't have this problem.

You simply need to create a new SMTP connector.
Set the cost as 1 (changing the other to 2) and then remove the * from the list of the domains on the new connector and provide it with a list of the domains the other server is responsible for. Set it to use a smart host, and enter the IP address of the other server in [] - so [192.168.1.1]. Apply ok out.

Simon that's great, I'll be trying it as soon as an appropriate time allows.
      Thanks very much.
