I have a reference system that is the default settings so that I can check.

The settings are first, second and third retry 10 minutes, subsequent retries 15 minutes.
Delay notification after 12 hours, timeout after 48 hours.

It is changed on the properties of the SMTP virtual server.

        Did you actually look?

ESM, Servers, <your server>, Protocols, SMTP. Right click on the SMTP VS and choose Properties. Click on the tab Delivery.

Re: what are the default exchange 2003 queue settings?

sure i did look... but i did not find it...
thanks for the detailed answer where to find it.

ok so now i have found it and what does this times mean?

          first retry 10min
          second 10min
          third 10 min
          subsequent retry interval 15min
          delay notification 12 hours
          expiration timeout 2 days

          how does this work?
first attempt fails and than after 10 minutes comes the first retry.
than after another 10 minutes (we are at 20 min after the first fail)
than after another 10 minutes (we are at 30 min after the first fail)

so 30 minutes is the maximum time?
what do the other times mean?

          thanks

Re: what are the default exchange 2003 queue settings?

Just as a guess from what you have written:

first retry 10min - tries 10 mins after the initial send.
            second 10min - waits 10 more mins
third 10 min - waits 10 more mins.
subsequent retry interval 15min - so it keeps retrying every 15 mins after that 30.
delay notification 12 hours - You don't know about the problem until 12 hours after the message was sent.
expiration timeout 2 days - message expires and you get an NDR.
            cheers

It is 2 days, not 2 days 48 hours (which would be 4 days).

                    i don't get this....

                    1 day = 24 hours
                    2 day's = 48 hours

                    what i have understood here:

it will try for 48 hours to send the mails.

In your post you said 2 day's 48 hour's. Did you mean 2 days and 48 hours? If so, that is not correct, it is 2 days (which is 48 hours) not 2 days AND 48 hours (which is 4 days). If you meant 2 days OR 48 hours then that is the same thing and you don't need to say it both ways.

I think it may just be a simple case of how you read it
Maybe 2 days (or 48 hours) would be better than 2days 48hours which would be read as 2 days plus 48 hours.

                        EDIT: What he said!
                        cheers
