  • Where does contact list of an exchage user get stored?

If I create a new contact from Outlook Web Access on Exchange 2003, then where does this contact get stored in Exchange server ? Basically what is the backend repository the Exchange server maintains for storing the contacts lists per exchange user.

Would appreciate if anyone can help me understand.

If you are wanting to back a users contacts up - the best way would be to export to a PST file...remembering to select contacts as part of your selection.

Sometimes however a user thinks theyve added people into their contacts because when they type the address outlook suggests a possible recipiant. In this case this file is an ND2 file. Outlook caches your most used 100 addresses and stores them in this file.

    Hope this helps

      Thanks Paul for your reply.

I actually want to access the Exchange personal address book/contacts list from a web-application. So wanted to understand how & where they are getting stored in Exchange server and how can search be performed on them.
      What is ND2 file ?

        C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.NK2

I believe that's the file he's referring to, which only the Outlook client uses, not the OWA. Note that it can also get corrupted (at will it seems). If an end user refuses to use their contact list, and only uses their NK2 file... slap them

Or... after hours rename the file (and make a backup copy to be safe), see them squirm, then come in as the wonder tech and fix it. See if that teaches them a lesson

As for their contacts, I believe OWA should be able to see their main personal Exchange Contact book, as long as it's not in a subdirectory. Don't have access to check it currently though. It may be only the corporate contact list (AD email addresses) that can be seen from OWA.

If you create a contact in OWA then it is stored in Contacts folder which is part of the mailbox.
