Master and member servers? Do you mean front end and back end or ones a DC and one is a memeber server?

I assume the latter is true. Do both servers have mailboxes on? Which is your blobal catalogue or are both?

I am very new to exchange, What I know they are both not DC and I think its back and front end settings. the master is the bridge head which sends mails out.

How do I verify to know which settings I have??

Ok so one is the front end and one is the backend. If your users are using OWA (Outlook web access) then which ever server you restart they wont be able to get e-mail (well if they are connecting to the front end... which they should in your setup... otherwise whats the point in having a frontend!).

        Basicallt this is what happens

        - User connects to frontend and logs in using Internet Explorer (or other web browser)
        - Front end checks with domain controller for correct credentials
        - Front end goes to back end and gets mail box info and displays to user

So you see if you stop either of the three servers in this scenario and it doesn't work.

If your users are using Outlook then they should connect to the backend. Here you should be able to restart your front end server as much as you look. They wont notice!

Thank you for shedding some light on Exchange setups.

My users connect using both, outlook as well as web access when they are out of the office.

The problem happened for some users not all. which comes to my previous question. how do I know, check or veirfy what type of settings I have on my servers? and

How do I make all users connect to send and receive mails from the master server so that I can shutdown the member server

Basically you cannot shutdown the server with the mailboxes as both OWA and Outlook users wont be able to get their mailboxes. You could look at Exchange clustering to solve this problem but its and expensive thing to do just so you can shutdown your exchange servers.

Why do you need to shut down so frequently? Cant you schedule some at risk time so your users know that 9pm - 10pm thursday say their mailboxes maybe unavailable?

To answer your question with an answer that is totally stupid... you could forward all your web access users to the mailbox server (aka backend) and then restart your front end. This means both users will be able to get mail but you are putting a HUGE risk of attack on your back end server... I would not do this in any circumstance... I would look at getting another front end server to be honest if you needed to restart or shutdown that often.

            Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply, by the way all mail boxes are on the master server.

I am not shuttingdown my other server frenquently. I am planning to sort-off remove exchange and use it for something else.

I will apreciate links and any resorces in regard to setting up exchange server from multiple servers to single server.

I also setup of backend and backend setup.

              Thanks.
