  • Message Journaling Only Picking Up Internal Communication

    Hi all,

I'm running an Exchange 2000 box with message journaling configured to a public folder. The weird thing is that the only things that show up are messages that are sent from our organization or messages that were received or sent internally. Nothing from other mail servers is displayed.

I'm running Trend Scanmail 8.0 and GFI MailEssentials 12 on this box too and disabling all the services for these products didn't solve the problem. I thought that these might be interfering with SMTP mail flow.

Could it be that I'm missing some sort of permissions' setting on the PF?

    Thanks in advance.

The official advice from Microsoft I believe is to NOT journal to a public folder, but to a mailbox. That is always the way that I have done it.

I have heard though that enabling envelope journaling improves matters.

My preference though would be to use a mailbox and then a third party tool to archive the journaled items.

    Simon.

I also read that Microsoft recommends not using a PF but the problem is Exchange 2000 Std limits the database to approximately 16 GB. Using a mialbox instead would severely cut into my users' storage capacity and that is really not an option.

I'm trying to get this to work so that I can use GFI MailArchiver (which seems very limited so far) to help manage the millions of PST files we have compiled over the years. I also have envelope journaling enabled.

      Thanks,
      Tim

Perhaps you should consider an upgrade, as Exchange 2000 is no longer supported and is over 9 years old. Exchange 2003 increases the limit to 75gb and Exchange 2007 standard has an unlimited database size.

I think you need to look at the instructions for GFI Mail Archiver a little closer.

        It uses a mailbox.
It removes the content from that mailbox.
You can import the PST files directly in to GFI Mail Archiver, you don't have to import them in to Exchange.

I believe old versions of GFI used to store the mail on the database, therefore doubling the size. For some reason, I was under the impression that MailArchiver 5 did the same.

Anyhow, I fixed the problem by using a mailbox instead of PF, still weird that the PF never worked properly but I guess that's why MS didn't recommend them for journaling.

We are in the midst of a massive overhaul of our infrastructure but I have to wait a few months until the budget is worked out. I am well aware of the limitations of Exchange 2000, believe me.

          Thanks.
