  • microsoft exchange server is unavailable

    Hello all,

Here is my set up; I have an exchange server 2003 in a single server scenario. I have just configured RCP over HTTP and every thing is working just fine, the problem is with my manager’s lap top whenever I try to configure his account on his Dell latitude d 630 running windows XP and office 2003 with all the updates. I get this error massage “the action can not be completed. The connection to Microsoft exchange server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.

All other computers in my company are connected fine. We are all getting the IP address from our DHCP. Even I created his account on my laptop and it worked fine.

I created a new user account on his laptop and a new Email profile and tried to configure it but same result, there is firewall installed and there is no antivirus installed.

    Any ideas?

If it is just one machine with the problem and crosses user accounts then you have to look at other things. Network drivers would be the first place, network card, ports, something like that.

Have you confirmed the problem doesn't follow the user to another machine?

When it comes to Outlook issues, there are only three things I do.

        1. New Outlook Profile
        2. New Windows Profile
        3. Wipe the machine.

You have ruled out the first two with a new user, therefore I would be looking to wipe the machine, particularly if it has never been rebuilt and/or has the Windows installation that it came with. I distrust vendor supplied builds and the first thing I do with a new machine is wipe it.

            Not really.
I work on a results basis. If everything is up to date and I cannot get Outlook to work in 30 minutes then it gets wiped. I know that will resolve the problem better than 9 times out of ten.

If the problem does not follow the user to another machine, but has survived a rebuild then it is most likely to be network error, something like that. Check cable, NICs etc. If the user connects over wireless then connect over wired.

When are you getting this error while accessing outlook?
                  in LAN or in Webmail?
