  • Not receiving for multiple e-mail domains

I have a customer with a SBS 2003 server, OS at SP2, Exchange at SP2.

We have 5-6 domains defined in our Recipient Policy.

All MX records point properly at our public IP.

I've used checkdns.net to verify that each domain point to our system and our server responds to each domain positively and verify that the server is authoritative for the domains.

I can telnet to each domain on port 25 and get an appropraite response.

All users have e-mail addresses defined for all domains.

The server returns a 451 4.4.1 error on all domains except one ONLY when certain domains attempt to send mail.

I have change the default domain to be one which is generating the error, set the admin account so that it's default account matches the domains, set the DNS and maquerade to match the new default domain, restarted all services and NO GO.

The server continously receives only for the one domain that it ogigianlly received for and returns the error for all others......

I've deleted all of the domains and e-mail addresses and recreated everything NO GO

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Sounds like the recipient policy isn't updating the domains list properly.
If you have deleted the domains from recipient policy and don't have anything else that has to be updated for the additional domains then I would suspect the IIS metabase isn't updating correctly. Repairing that isn't simple - usually involves a reinstall of IIS and Exchange.

      Thanks Sembee,

After beating my head against the wall with this, I finally gained access to the customers registrar (who is providing the DNS service for these domains) and found that there was no way to create an A record and then set the MX record to the name. You can only set the MX record to an IP address. I move the DNS to our web host and everything works fine now.

      Thanks.

MX records cannot be IP addresses, so either the ISP is doing something wrong or they are doing something in the background in an effort to make things "simple" for their customers.

It's actually their registrar not their ISP. They are using http://www.cheapdomainname.com. I moved the DNS to a system I can control...problem solved!
