  • Cannot connect to new Exchange 2003 Front End Server

We have a single back end exchange server which has been in place for some time and works without issue. I attempted to build a front end server yesterday (Win 2k3 Server, Exchange 2003 and all service packs).

As per all of the instructions I have come across I built the server as an additional server and simply ticked the front end checkbox in ESM.

I had expected to be able to connect to the front end server without any problems using outlook 2000 as a mail client.....but it wont connect.

The front and back end servers are on the same subnet with no restrictions in between.

I'm sure I am missing something staringly obvious, but other than ticking the aforementioned checkbox I cant find mention of anything else.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

EDIT: I have tried to send mail using telnet through the front end server and it works without a hitch. I can also telnet both ways between front and back end servers.

The outlook client uses MAPI to connect to exchange, this connection is done to the mailbox servver, or back-end server.

If you where to use OWA or RPC over HTTP, you would be using the front-end server.

Thanks thats great - given the number of occurrences of RPC over HTTP that appear when searching on this subject, I should have spotted that.

If you are using Outlook 2000 then you cannot use RPC over HTTPS. That is a feature of Outlook 2003 and Windows XP or higher.

If the server has been configured correctly then Outlook will redirect to the correct server if you are connecting internally.
